The First 45 - The Godfather II

Join the Family, or Head to the Mattresses?

by Raccoonacorn

The Godfather II's release was one that was light on hype, and very few of us expected much innovation from the title. Let's face it - GTA clones are everywhere, and movie/novel tie-ins are hardly known to produce solid games.

Yet, there is something intruiging when pondering a mix of GTA's sandbox gamepaly and Puzo's gangland epic. It just seems...right. Like chocolate and peanut butter.

So, does The Godfather II strike out and become an original, refreshing IP?

At heart, The First 45 is a first impressions video. There's a catch, the impressions we offer are taken solely from the first 45 minutes that we spend playing a game. They say first impressions are the most important, and we feel it is the same with games. If you really aren't pulled into a game within the initial hour, chances are good you won't dig it after that.

There are no exceptions, this is exactly the beginning 45 minutes, from the time we boot up the game. What if the game pulls an MGS and starts with a 30 minute cutscene? That's too bad. We live in a fast-paced society, and we don't have time to waste. We just want to play games.

This dude kept coming in to my work and talking about this game for months! Kept telling me to reserve it cause the first one was amazing. I've never played it so I wouldn't know.

But then the release date came and he walks in telling me that it wasn't at all what he wanted. I had to laugh just because of the amount he talked about it beforehand. Just goes to show how much hype can do to a gamer.

I personally would like to try it, even though it does kinda look a little like the "Scarface" game for xbox. But I liked that too, so maybe when the price goes down I'll give it a shot.

Guys, I played this yesterday and I couldn't disagree more. IMO this game is well below average and I think the combat system is awful. However, I will continue to play it because Duvall is just so effing FTW.

@mikeyraw196: having played a bit more of the game, I have to agree with you. Although it was fun to learn the controls in the first 45 minutes, that was pretty much where the fun ended for me. Turns out the system for building the family actually sucks.

Strange that a game would give such a good first impression and fall apart.

Coop, this game was legitimately fun for me in those first 45 minutes. I have to say, I was kinda drawn in by the setting. It's my people, what can I say.
