Activision and id Threaten Wolfenstein Pirates
Not With Violence, Sadly
by Sarah

Though Wolfenstein doesn’t come out until the end of the month, the PC version has already been leaked, and is probably being downloaded illegally as I write this. Of course, since most people who use the internet aren’t very bright, many pirates are talking about their unlawful gains publicly on internet forums and message boards, as well as posting screenshots and videos. This is making it easy for developer iD and publisher Activision to find law-breaking illegal downloaders.
Pete Sokal, community manager for id, had some strong words for Wolfenstein pirates:
“I must warn anyone involved that Activision's legal department is taking this matter very seriously… Same applies here on the forums. If you mention that you have acquired this build, you are openly admitting to illegally obtaining the build and will be banned straight away. You have been warned… With regards to any footage, screenshots and comments posted here and all over the internet, an important thing to keep in mind is that these were not created from a build of the game that was final or consumer ready. There's nothing we can do about it now except continue working on the game.”
Wait, that’s it? Pirates will be “banned”, presumably from the multiplayer portion of the game readily available on the internets? Come on, this is Activision we’re talking about! Bobby Kotick is ruthless, I want bloodshed, or at least legal action! Personally, I think video game piracy is a dick move, and I hope Activision nails illegal downloaders. Bitch and moan about it all you want, but piracy comes so naturally to gamers these days that some people forget it’s against the law to take something that doesn’t belong to you and that you did not pay for. Is it okay to go to GameStop and grab products off the shelves, then run out of the store? Of course not. I know I’m in the minority here, but don’t go crying to the internets if Activision catches you because you were dumb enough to brag about your illegal activities on a message board.
