Activision Announces Big League Sports: Summer

Sequel to Horribly-Rated Game Coming This June

by Sarah

We all know that it’s kind of hard to find a good game on the Wii. It’s not that they’re not out there, but with store shelves overflowing with third-party shovelware, the good ones are more difficult to discern. Dedicated gamers like you and me know better, of course, but what about parents? Grandparents? Those trying to get a good family game, or something to play at their next party? What about the people who just don’t know better? For those people, there’s Big League Sports.

The original Big League Sports came out last year to horrible reviews, and featured drills—not full games—from various sports. Despite low scores, the game apparently sold enough copies to warrant a sequel, which publisher Activision has cleverly titled Big League Sports: Summer. The game will feature “the most popular warm weather sports”, which I’m guessing means there will be some rousing games of staying inside with the air conditioner blasting, a bit of competitive ice cream devouring, and if we’re really lucky, my personal favorite, the lazy river float. Whew, I’m getting exhausted just thinking about it.

To be fair, I did not play the first Big League Sports (in fact, I only just heard of it), so I cannot say whether or not it’s as bad as the reviews claim. Also, the press release promised better controls and graphics, so perhaps the developers have learned from their mistakes and put more effort into their product this time around. Big League Sports: Summer will be out in June, so we’ll probably find out more about it shortly. You can check out the full press release below.

MINNEAPOLIS, April 29, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Activision Publishing, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) today announced a new entry is coming to the Big League Sports franchise, Big League Sports: Summer. Set to release in June for Wii(TM) and Nintendo DS(TM), the game is all about fun in the sun!

"The Big League Sports franchise focuses on individual challenges within popular sports, a concept that fans of those pastimes have embraced," said David Oxford, Activision Publishing. "Big League Sports: Summer takes the most popular warm weather sports and gives the player even more activities to engage in, along with much improved controls and graphics."

Big League Sports: Summer focuses in on classic sunshine pastimes of tennis, beach volleyball, golf, soccer, baseball and football. Players will be able to customize their characters and play through a variety of exciting games in single player mode. In addition, multiplayer mode will allow up to four players on Wii(TM), where players can compete through All-Star skill challenges and cooperate through team-based play.
