Activision Releasing Sierra Adventure Games on Steam
And the Adventure Comeback Continues
by Sarah

With the adventure genre seemingly resurrected a little more every day, Activision has jumped on the bandwagon and released a backlog of Sierra adventure games on downloadable service Steam. This comes just a couple of weeks after LucasArts announced that it was releasing its long-discontinued, but still beloved, classics on Steam. With both Tales of Monkey Island and The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition enjoying strong sales, it appears that Activision finally found something of Sierra's to exploit. King's Quest Collection and Space Quest Collection are available now for $14.99; this is apparently a discounted price that only lasts until July 30, so move fast.
Though LucasArts was arguably the biggest adventure game publisher of the 1990s, Sierra was their biggest contender in the genre. Ironically, when asked about these adventure games after Activision acquired Sierra parent company Vivendi in 2008, a rep for the publisher stated, "We are retaining only those franchises that are a strong fit with our long-term strategy ... We will not publish any other titles that previously were part of the Vivendi Games portfolio and we are currently reviewing our options regarding those titles." I guess they were just waiting for the right moment to get maximum profits from these old fan favorites.
Activision also added Aces of the Galaxy, Timeshift, and 3D Ultra Minigolf Adventures to its Steam library. Hey, Bobby Kotick, how about Gobliiins?
