Amazon.com Sells 17 Wiis a Second
For the Entire Five Minutes They Were Available

Breaking news! There’s this thing Nintendo made called the Wii. It’s a little white box, and apparently it’s magic. Maybe it does your taxes or something. I’m pretty sure it cures cancer too. Everyone wants one! No one can get one! It’s insanity!
Behold my power!
Okay, maybe by now the fact that Nintendo is kicking ass and taking names when it comes to system sales isn’t really news. The magical little white box was an especially huge seller for online retailer Amazon.com, who sold 17 units a second this year. Wii accessories, like the remote and nunchuk controllers, were also a customer favorite. These and other video game sales helped make this Amazon’s most profitable year to date.
Keep in mind that the 17 units per second statistic refers only to when they actually had the Wiis in stock; otherwise, sales would have been in the hundreds of millions! Still, that’s pretty impressive. At this rate, Wiis will still be selling out at the speed of light well into 2008.

that's a lot of Wii's. I thought you could just go into a store and buy one, but this holiday season it seems there was a sudden Wii drought. Any reason?
I worked at GameStop up until the end of October, Wiis were nearly impossible to get all year long. The holiday season just made it that much worse.
