Last week brought about a major announcement from Square Enix that had RPG fans beyond excited: the SNES classic Chrono Trigger would be coming to the DS later this year. What started as a simple rumor became confirmed in less than a day, and Square Enix is keeping excitement levels up with a new trailer.



Watching this now, it’s apparent to me that one of my other favorite Square games, SaGa Frontier, took a lot of its artistic inspiration directly from this game—and that’s a good thing. It’s kind of funny to me that Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger are both getting the DS treatment this year, because the two were also re-released together in 2001 in a PS1 compilation. There isn’t an official release date yet, but the tentative promise of “Winter 2008” is good enough for me. Not as good as if it was coming out tomorrow, but good enough.
