Collector’s Editions
What’s Worth the Extra Cash?
by Sarah
Remember when it was rare that a new release came out with two different editions? Collector’s Editions used to be, you know, collectable, meaning hard to find and worth keeping. Nowadays, however, it seems like every other game has two (or even three) versions for sale, all of them at different price points. But is it worth it? Sometimes all your ten extra bucks gets you is a different case and a "making of" DVD, while other times you get action figures, special artwork, or maybe even a safety deposit box.
Here are a few of the Special Edition games we’ll see in the coming months. Ultimately, only you can decide whether or not they’re worth it, but this should make it a little easier to figure out which ones to invest in.
Call of Duty 4 (360 version)
For a mere $69.99, you can have not only the newest game in the Call of Duty series, but also a hardcover art book, a walk-through, and a documentary of the British S.A.S. Also included on the bonus DVD is the “making of” video, for all of you fans who just really needed to know what went on behind the scenes of this game.
Hellgate: London (PC)
Also ten dollars more than the regular price, Hellgate: London Collector’s Edition gives you yet another “making of” DVD. In addition, you get the soundtrack and a poster map, essential for when you get lost, as well as an in-game pet and a Dark Horse graphic novel. Given that a special edition PC game is the same price as a regular 360 or PS3 game, that’s actually not a bad deal.
Assassin’s Creed (PS3 and 360)
The Assassin’s Creed bonus DVD has been loaded with extras: a behind-the-scenes look at the game, interviews with the developers and producers, as well as some short films made by some contest winners. If that’s not enough, you also get a 3-inch action figure, a mini strategy guide, and some Penny Arcade comics, all for ten extra bucks. Sold!
Crysis (PC)
The Crysis Collector’s Edition contains, shockingly enough, a bonus DVD with a "Making of Crysis" feature. It also comes with the official soundtrack and a 16-page concept art book. The whole thing is packaged in a fancy individually numbered box. Not much of an offering for those ten extra dollars, unless you’re a big fan of art books.
Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3 and 360)
Not about to be outdone by Spartan helmets and metal casing, the upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV offers a $90 Special Edition for its hardcore fans that have been waiting patiently for the series’ first next-gen offering. Don’t think you’re getting just a mere bonus DVD with this baby. The Special Edition comes with an art book and soundtrack CD, along with a Rockstar duffel bag. The entire thing is stored inside your very own safety deposit box. And what do you do with the keys to the deposit box? You keep them on your Rockstar keychain, of course! Even for $30 more, this is still something GTA fans will be dying to get their hands on.

Halo 3 limited edition was the first time I even considered buying a special edition. The helmet looks cool mounted right in the middle of the Bus.
I like game trinkets. I'd buy more extras for games that I like.
Assassin's Creed may be the first special edition I buy. Gotta get that figure.
collect this collect that it all ends up at a yard sale in the end....
