Dark Spire Screenshots are Classically Modern
Atlus's Old School Inspired RPG Has Two Distinct Looks
by Sarah

Atlus, the masters of role-playing games and press releases (among other things) just sent me a set of screenshots from their upcoming DS RPG, The Dark Spire. Announced a few months back, Dark Spire is inspired by classic (read: OLD) pseudo-3D text-based dungeon crawlers from the days of yore (read: circa the 1980s). What you may not know is that the game will have two distinct looks for the player to choose from. In the words of Atlus:
In case you're not aware what that means, quick explanation: the game comes with two presentation modes -- "Classic" and "Modern." "Modern" is what you'd expect of a present day DS dungeon-crawler, while still offering a rather unique aesthetic. "Classic," on the other hand, is straight out of a 1980's CRPG, complete with the sounds and music that you'd expect to hear from a game of that era. It's one more way the game finds to differentiate itself, and it's also a rather fun trip down memory lane for older gamers. Yay for nostalgia!
Yay indeed. What mode would you play in? Part of me wants to try out the classic mode for funsies, but I wonder if I would get annoyed by the lack of, you know, graphics. Check out the screens below and let me know what you think.

I'm totally feeling classic mode. I think the sound effects would be what I'd enjoy most about that experience.
I can't wait! Still now release date, huh? Or did I miss it somewhere in the news mix?
Can I play the new graphics with the old-school sounds? Is this not Burger King?
@ QMarc: Right now, the date is listed at mid-April.
Whoa, shit! That's awesome! I haven't been keeping up with release dates lately. A lot of school and social outlets over the past month, or so.
