Dead Space: Extraction Sells 9,000 Copies in September

Addendum: It Was Released on Sept. 29

by Sarah

Upon seeing the headline that Dead Space: Extraction only sold a measly 9,000 copies in September, the month of its release, I was momentarily distressed. After all, Extraction turned out to be pretty freaking good. As I prepared to launch into yet another tirade about why gamers should buy Mature-rated Wii games, I came to another realization: Dead Space: Extraction was only out for two days in September, and the sales period in question covered five days, from September 29 to October 3. Okay, I guess that’s a little better. A little.

If Extraction continues at this pace, first month sales will still be pretty paltry, so I’m hoping the good review scores and word of mouth can help the rail shooter. Analyst Jesse Divnich hypothesized that EA’s lack of marketing for the game may have affected sales, and though I’m no industry analyst, I think he might have a point. After all, not telling people about something usually means that people won’t care about it, or even know it exists. While these early numbers aren’t great, perhaps Extraction can still manage to have a moderately successful holiday season. After all, Dead Space’s sales weren’t anything to write home about upon its launch last year, but it ended up doing well enough to warrant a Wii spin-off. I guess the lesson learned is, if Extraction sales pick up, expect a PSP installment next year. Or something.

Listen, just go buy it, it’s a good game.

Ouch. I know, it's only been a few days, but... ouch.
