DJ Jazzy Jeff Making an Appearance in DJ Hero

Taking Time Out of His Busy Schedule

by Sarah

Remember DJ Jazzy Jeff? If you were born after 1989, the answer is probably a resounding “No!”. He’s a disc jockey most notable for launching a music career alongside Will Smith and then being nowhere near as successful as him. He will also be a playable character in the upcoming music game DJ Hero. Activision sent out a press release this morning detailing Jazz’s appearance in the game, as well as the fact that there will be a DJ Jazzy Jeff playlist. Are you ready to party like it’s the early 90s?

"I am very, very excited DJ culture is finally getting its due. To have a song in DJ Hero is a dream come true; to be a character someone can pick up the controller and select you and play is probably the biggest thing to happen to me in my career… Music is so much a part of everyone's life, DJ Hero is going to appeal to almost everybody."

If I cared about DJ culture at all, I would probably be more excited about DJ Hero, but nothing about this game has appealed to me yet. Of course, I haven’t gotten my hands on it either, so that might change everything. As you probably already know, DJ Hero will be out this holiday season for the 360, PS3, Wii, and PS2. Is Jazzy Jeff’s cameo enough to get you to spend $120 on the game and peripheral?

Damn... someone stop Sarah's supply of Haterade. Apart from being nearly universally recognized as maybe the premiere hip-hop DJ, Jeff has also gone on to produce records for some of the biggest rap and R&B acts. Jill Scott, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Eminem, and the Black Eyed Peas are just a few of the acts that have had Jeff's hands on them.

While that's cool for DJ Hero, I was really hoping Scratch would be able to win this war. Guess I'll have to wait and see...

@Sean: Again, if I cared about hip hop DJs even a little bit, that information would probably be of interest to me.

I can't wait to port Jeff's model into G-Mod and make L4D2's "Coach" throw him out of a doorway.

@Sean: All that said, he's still absolutely best known as the guy from Will Smith's CDs.
