E3 09: Sony Press Conference Liveblog

Is This the Year of the PlayStation?

by Sarah

Sorry for the lateness, folks. Internet sucks, Jack Tretton's on stage, let's get right into it.

1:07 - And that's it.

1:06 - Demo must been seen to be believed. March 2010 for GoWIII.

1:03 - The QTE for finishing the minotaur was absolutely brutal.

1:01 - The scope of this game is absolutely huge.

1:00 - Live demo action... start menu to gameplay seamlessly.

12:59 - God of War III... it's about time.

12:58  - Still no date. Shocker.

12:56 - Gran Turismo 5 teaser. What's left to say about this game anymore?

12:53 - A bit of new footage tacked on at the end... graphically impressive. Nice exclusive for PlayStation.

12:52 - Same video that was released earlier. Still looks fantastic.

12:51 - Project Trico aka The Last Guardian.

12:50 - You'll be able to download other created tracks to then "remix" yourself.

12:48 - Everything renders in real-time, including lighting, mountains... literally everything.

12:47 - Interface looks incredibly simple, but with tons of depth.

12:46 - Once the track is laid, you can drive with AI cars to test out the driveability.

12:44 - Real-time physics... weapons... looks like a fairly standard kart racer, but with crazy customization.

12:43 - The avatars look like Muggs, Munnys, and other vinyl collectibles.

12:41 - ModNation Racers... the next new PS3 exclusive to fall under the Play, Create, Share banner.

12:41 - LittleBigPlanet news. Looks at some new costumes from Disney. Kinda cool, but what else ya got?

12:40 - Motion controller is tentatively schedule for early 2010.

12:39 - Archery demo was much better than Nintendo's.

12:37 - Virtual combat arena footage actually looks the best of everything they've shown. Throwing stars react pretty well.

12:36 - This thing is going to be pricy as all hell. Maybe.

12:34 - Dude writes his name in the air and it shows up in the game. Kinda neat. I don't know about this. It's clear it's still very early.

12:32 - And now they show it in use as if it was an FPS... the tracking is extremely acurate.

12:30 - A demo of a virtual living room where the tester is watching himself on TV. It's trippy. But not exactly awe inspiring.

12:29 - Some guy picks up what looks like a really bad Wii-mote knock-off. There's a tracking ball for the PlayStation Eye to follow. Ugh.

12:28 - Tretton's talking about motion control. I don't like where this is going.

12:27 - And it's an online MMO. Too bad.

12:26 - Absolutely shocked. Footage is awesome. And, oh yeah, PS3 exclusive.

12:25 - First footage of Final Fantasy XIV.... WHAT?!

12:24 - How can they constantly stand at the forefront of graphical presentation? This game looks gorgeous.

12:21 - Final Fantasy XIII time. A video sneak peak. Different from what we saw at Microsoft.

12:20 - Not bad at all. Definitely looking forward to AC2.

12:20 - You can now disarm enemies of any of their 30 weapons... in addition to the weapons you can unlock by connecting the PSP version of Assassin's Creed.

12:18 - Enzio will be even deadlier than Altair.

12:17 - You'll be able to use DaVinci's flying machine... flight looks smooth... City of Venice looks really huge...

12:16 - Holy balls does this look aboslutely stunning.

12:15 - Now a demo of Assassin's Creed 2...

12:15 - Play as a spy across the world in the 1970s.

12:14 - Brand new property from Rockstar... Agent... PS3 exclusive.

12:13 - Jesus, this thing is taking forever.

12:10 - Buzz... Saw... Tekken 6... Dark Void... nothing too impressive here.

12:10 - FFXIII... MAG... Batman... come on Sony, where's the new stuff?

12:08 - PS3 montage time... please have something great.

12:06 - Oh good, a Home montage video.

12:05 - I don't care how many people use Home, it's still pretty boring.

12:04 - Final Fantasy VII on PSN today?! Did I just hear that?

12:01 - Soul Calibur looks decent... PixelJunk looks good... Hot Shots Tennis looks kinda blah...

12:00 - Now a look at some upcoming PSP games. LittleBigPlanet... Jak and Daxter... Motorstorm...

11:59 - Resident Evil developed specifically for the PSP next year. Sweet deal.

11:56 - Lots of applause and cheers. Followed by a clip of snake in a box. Hilarious.

11:52 -
Trailer time!

11:52 -
Kojima is writing the script and producing. Not a spinoff or side story.

11:51 -
Peace Walker is set 10 years after MGS3. This is a true sequel of the Metal Gear franchise.

11:50 -
HIDEO KOJIMA TAKES THE STAGE TO TALK METAL GEAR SOLID: PEACE WALKER.

11:50 -
Gran Turismo will be out Oct. 1, same day as PSP Go.

11:48 -
Video of how sexy the PSP Go looks with Gran Turismo. Actually seems to be an impressive handheld racing game.

11:46 -

11:44 -
Game runs 60 fps, has 600 cars, 35 tracks.

Kazunouri Yamauchi takes the stage, talks in Japanese. Translator says he's announcing Gran Turismo PSP.

11:41 -
Starting today, video delivery service will be available on the PSP as well, so it will be easy to download video or gaming content directly to your PSP. Tons of video content launching TODAY.

11:40 -
Moving forward all PSP games will be sold in stores and simultaneously available for digital download. Coming out on October 1st, $249. A bit pricey...

11:39 -
Lowering cost of PSP development so that even more games will be made for the PSP.

11:38 -
Media Go can be used to access the PlayStation Store directly from the PC.

11:37 -
PSP Go is much smaller and lighter than original PSP. Well, duh. Built-in Wifi, bluetooth, 16 gigs of internal memory.

11:36 -
Time to see the PSP Go, the "worst kept secret at E3". At least Sony has a sense of humor. This is Kaz Hirai onstage now, sorry, internet is still craptastic.

11:33 -
ARE YOU SERIOUSLY TALKING ABOUT TEEN AND TWEEN GIRLS AND THE HANNAH MONTANA PSP BUNDLE. SERIOUSLY.

11:32 -
Time to talk PSP! Here we go! Give me a reason to buy the PSP Go, guys!

11:31 -
Very impressed. It's going to be playable on the floor.

11:28 - The commander in this game seems to have the exact same role as the one in Battlefield 2.

11:26 -
Time to talk MAG, which of course pits 256 players against each other on the field of battle. We're going to actually see one of these battles LIVE. Wow.

11:24 -
Uncharted gameplay is met with loud applause. No release date?

11:22 -
Uncharted 2 looks amazing. I am loving seeing Nathan outside of his jungle environment.

11:20 -
Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta starts tonight at midnight.

11:21 -
Time to talk Uncharted 2, YES. President of Naughty Dog taking the stage.

11:20 -
Tretton talks inFamous and its great reviews. Yes, but that's already out, guys!

11:19 -
"Let's talk about what gamers really care about: great games." Yes, thank you.

11:17
- Tretton talks about the price of the PS2 and how great it is. Everyone is hungry for some big stuff after what just went down at Nintendo.

No price drop on the PS3? Come on. You know you gotta spend money to make money, and by that I mean you have to lower your price before I even consider purchasing your system, Sony...

Sony definitely held their own this year. I held my breath as soon as the motion controller demo was setup.

It does not matter what games Sony has lined up and they're not much, without a price drop they will continue to have a lousy outcome.
