Final Fantasy VII Remake

Rumor, or Bigger Rumor?

by Sarah

So the Tokyo Game Show has come and gone, and once again, I’m hearing tall tales about a possible remake of one of the most beloved games of all time, Final Fantasy VII. Rumors are flying left and right, yet I can’t find any concrete evidence of this possibility. Have the fanboys finally snapped, convincing themselves that the PS3 version of FFVII they’ve been waiting for since these rumors first emerged in 2005 is really coming? Is Square Enix teasing us, knowing that many gamers start salivating the minute the words "Final Fantasy VII" are mentioned in any form? Or is it possible that someday, somehow, this will be a reality and not just a far-fetched hope from my wildest dreams? I’ll try not to hold my breath. I’m not going to lie, FFVII is definitely in my top five favorite games of all time. Cliché? Maybe a little, but who cares? Before Final Fantasy came into my life, my console experiences consisted mostly of platformers with cartoony characters or straightforward action/adventure games. I never attempted to play anything with more depth, leaving that kind of gaming to my little brother. However, when he came home one day with Final Fantasy VII and I observed him making his way through cinematic cut scenes, intriguing dialogue, and turn-based fights, I thought, Hey, maybe this is something I can get into. It’s now ten years later, and as you may have guessed by my Persona 3 review, RPGs are my favorite game genre. I’ve since played every Final Fantasy, not to mention countless other role-playing titles. Graphics and gameplay have evolved considerably over the last decade, but FFVII will always hold a special place in my heart, no matter how primitive it seems now. And I know I’m not the only one; Final Fantasy VII has become a phenomenon, and is widely considered to be one of the greatest games of all time. A new version with updated graphics, keeping the same wonderful storyline intact, seems like a no-brainer. What better to help mediocre PS3 sales than the mother of all exclusive titles, one that has a built-in fan base ten years in the making? Why is it that instead of a revamped FFVII, we’re getting a handful of pseudo-sequels, prequels, and minigame spin-offs? (FFVII Snowboarding for mobile phones? Seriously?) All I’m saying is, should Sony and Square Enix decide to go ahead and let us have our Final Fantasy VII remake, I know I would go out and buy a PS3 the next day. I’m fairly certain I’m not the only one crazy enough to do that. I can’t say I have much interest in another Dirge of Cerberus game, but the real thing? That’s enough to make me invest in a PlayStation 3. Until then, I’ll just have to settle for playing my original copy on my PS1, hoping that the game discs remain intact after so many years of play.

final fantasy 7 is the final fantasy that got me into RPG's. it's true, though i've had a love for chrono trigger for a long time, final fantasy 7 is what broke the ice for me. it's because of final fantasy 7 that i went to final fantasy 8 and instantly fell in love with the franchise. final fantasy 8 is by far my favorite final fantasy of all.

and as a lover of final fantasy 7, i say... please square, PLEASE, give final fantasy 7 a rest. don't waste your resources tampering with a game, that in my eyes, doesn't deserve to be tampered with. if it's not broken, don't fix it.

use your resources and make a 'real' sequel to chrono trigger, or hell... don't make any sequels or prequels! make a new IP that is worthy of playing. don't feed us garbage new IPs and expect us to eat them based on the fact it carries the square-enix name and then turn around and feed us rehashed, rebaked, sequels, prequels, and spin offs.

Dirge of Cerebus should be wiped off the face of the earth...it ruined Vincent for me...I mean, by the time you got to the end of the game you couldn't care less what happened to Vincent.
