Final Fantasy XIII Trailer Looks Gorgeous

Still No Gameplay to Be Found

by Sarah

To be honest, I haven't been that excited about Final Fantasy XIII in a few months. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait for the game, and I know I'm going to buy it on day one and most likely love it--it's just that this has been such a given for me that I don't really need trailers or screenshots to sway me. Also, since the game still has no release date, I don't want to get psyched for something still months, if not years, away.

Still, this trailer reminded me that FFXIII exists, and it's beautiful. I'm starting to get that sense of epic-ness Final Fantasy games usually have, and seeing familiar summons and new faces in such a gorgeous setting has made me want this game even more.

Unfortunately, with no gameplay footage whatsoever, I find it very hard to believe that this game will make it out in 2009, at least in the U.S. I don't mind the wait, as long as the game is fantastic. I've been waiting for a next-gen Final Fantasy since I bought my PS3, but it seems like I will be waiting longer than I thought. Unless that Japanese text actually translates to "FFXIII is done, Merry Christmas!" Can anyone go ahead and interpret that for me? Thanks.

So beautiful that it brings tears to my eyes. I'm serious. I think this will bring us to a new level of Final Fantasy gaming.

To this day I've never completed an FF game....I don't have the attention span for them:( I'm kinda upset over it, I really want to enjoy them

The game looks great. I am just waiting to see if they did anything different in the battle system.

hahah. this trailer has been out since last year. I remember them even viewing it on G4 and they were asking if that is how the battle system is gonna work as if it did on the train segment. But i do admit, yes, final fantasy has yet to leave me underwhelmed with it's trailers and game design.

Meh... music sounds very Star War-ish. Characters look exactly the same.. again. Looks almost identical to FFXII to me. Can't tell who's a girl or boy, who might be good or bad. Maybe it's just me, but trailers are supposed to entice you about something.. all this game has going for it so far is the graphics. Of course there's no release date so they're trying to figure out more about the game as they make it, but give us SOMETHING to conceptualize LameEnix.

Maybe I'm just a cynic who can't take change, but ugh. I just feel like this just lacks something. It doesn't have the same feel as the older classic FF games. You can never tell what's going on, who's the enemy -- it's not getting me excited about anything except maybe the graphics, which I would sacrifice any day for a great storyline. This trailer tells no story whatsoever - it's a showcase of graphics, and I don't remember the FF series being amazing just based on that.

This is the first FF game I won't be getting when it comes out, and that's sad.

@Lisa: Don't knock it until you've tried it. Lately game trailers love to showcase graphics over content. So just wait until you can at least rent it or borrow a friend's copy.

the graphics are certainly beautiful... but I am leaning closer to Lisa's side in all of this... And what is with the Star Wars themed music and storm trooper looking enemies... jury is def. still out on this being a def. buy or not.

It's not to necessarily knocking it -- I have personally been really disappointed with the past few FFs released. I know other people haven't (and to my amazement, people actually loved FF12), but I can't help but point out that the newer FF games are less like the Final Fantasy series in general and more about catering to a newer generation that has no patience to sit there and brave through a tremendous storyline. I hated the fighting system in FF12, but that's a whole other story..

I don't know. I feel like they've dumbed it down so much for show value, and frankly, I can't afford to waste my time or $60+ on a sub-par game. Looks like I'll be borrowing the game from a friend if I can eventually get the bad taste out of my mouth that was FF12.

LOL! wow! great movie!.... I guess this means the gameplay videos will follow in another 7-9 months!... oh well. I shouldn't get to excited cuz everything they've released so far have been movies

it worries me a bit that we have yet to see gameplay and it apparently releases in 2009 and the fact that so far the few Square Enix games that have shown themselves on console have been less than spectacular, marred by issues and seemed rushed.. or so thats what the general opinion seems to have been, i have yet to play any of the square games..
