Games That Should Be: Labyrinth

You Have No Power Over Me!

by Sarah

Interesting fact: when I was brainstorming about which old school movies or TV shows should be made into video games, the 1986 classic Labyrinth was the first thing that sprung to mind (as Sean and Coop can attest to. So while preparing to write this article, I hopped on Wikipedia to do a little research, and what do you know? There already was a Labyrinth game for the Commodore 64. Now here’s the cool part: it was the first adventure game made by LucasArts and used an early version of the SCUMM engine, meaning that it was a direct precursor to… Maniac Mansion! Now with my obligatory MM shout-out of the day out of the way, we can move on to the Labyrinth game as I envision it: a next-gen adventure game with beautiful graphics, fully developed levels, a cinematic cut scene or two, and an intriguing cast of friends and enemies. You play as Sarah, the young heroine whose baby brother has been kidnapped by the evil Goblin King. Levels will include locations familiar to fans of the movie, such as the Bog of Eternal Stench, the Junkyard, and the Goblin City, as well as Jareth’s Castle itself. You’ll be joined along the way by Hoggle, Ludo, and Sir Didymus, who will help (or in some cases, hinder) your quest. In addition to fighting off Jareth’s followers and befriending a few odd puppet-like inhabitants of the maze, there will also be puzzles to solve and riddles to unravel if you hope to get your brother out of Jareth’s evil clutches before your time is up. You’ll really have to use your brain if you want to find the correct path to the castle and avoid certain death. Of course, this all leads up to the final boss fight with the Goblin King himself. I am aware that most games that are based off of movies usually tend to suck, but I really think that this is one film that developers could get right, if they wanted to. The gameplay practically writes itself, and fans of the cult favorite movie would definitely enjoy seeing these characters given a new life in the video game world. So… we’ll be seeing that remake any day now, right, LucasArts? What movies have you always thought would make a good game? Let me know!
