Games That Should Be: The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.
This Isn't the Old West You Learned About in History Class
by Sarah
It’s entirely possible that you have no idea who Brisco County, Jr. is. Up until a few years ago, neither did I, until a certain curly-haired obsessive fan showed me what I’d missed out on. The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. was a short-lived television show that aired for one season in the early 1990s. Set in the Old West, the show starred Bruce Campbell as Brisco, a lawyer-turned-bounty hunter hunting down the John Bly gang, who were responsible for the murder of his father. Along with his sidekick, Lord Bowler, and his trusty horse Comet, Brisco spent every episode pursuing his foes and a mystical sphere known as “the Orb” while narrowly avoiding death at every turn.
Brisco was mainly a western, but had some strong underlying science-fiction themes as well. Brisco and company managed to get their hands on some bizarre and futuristic gadgets throughout the course of the show. Many of these were precursors to modern-day inventions, and others were just plain ridiculous. The best part about the show was the tongue-in-cheek humor; it didn’t take itself too seriously, even though it was technically a drama, and made many references to modern-day occurrences, such as Elvis sightings and sobriety tests.
The idea came to me after finishing Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune for the PS3, which was absolutely fantastic and left me craving more adventure. It’s been awhile since I’ve watched the show (the entire series was released on DVD in the summer of 2006), but playing Uncharted stirred up some old memories of the series, and it instantly occurred to me that the show would make an excellent video game.
The main plot of the game would involve Brisco hunting down each of the 13 members of the John Bly gang, up to and including John Bly himself. Of course, he’ll be assisted by the often-grumpy Lord Bowler and Dixie Cousins, the beautiful and spunky con woman. The original cast would return to do voice acting, assuming that Bruce Campbell can take a break between filming Old Spice commercials. Brisco’s main transportation in the game will be Comet, but fear not; the horse-riding system will put Oblivion and Two Worlds to shame.
An adventure of this caliber is going to need top-notch environments, dazzling graphics, and hours upon hours of gameplay. I feel like the Wii is going to miss out on this one due to its technical inferiority, so the Xbox 360 and PS3 are where this game is headed. Gamers will not be able to get enough of this title, which will combine action, puzzles, fighting, self-referential humor, and an intense and well-paced story to create an incredible game. Though it’s been over a decade since the show went off the air, The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.: The Game could be one of this generation’s most exciting new games.
