GameStop Holiday Sales Up 35%

One Step Closer to World Domination

by Sarah

GameStop, the video game retailer that we all know and love (well, at least know) is having a phenomenal year. They opened their twelve-billionth store, bought out every other game seller past and future, and took over the world. Okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration—but not by much.

Things show no sign of slowing down either, with GameStop reporting that their sales from this past holiday season increased almost 35% from last year. A huge string of holiday hits and strong console sales helped the company make $2.3 billion over the nine-week period. New games made up 43.2% of sales, while hardware took up 26%. Among the top-selling games were Rock Band, Guitar Hero III, Super Mario Galaxy, Assassin’s Creed, and Call of Duty 4.

So what’s next for the ultimate chain of gaming stores? As someone formerly held in GameStop’s death grip (also known as an employee), I’m guessing they’re going to keep buying every available store in sight. Who knows, by the time you read this, they might own you too.
