GameTrailers Counts Down the Ten Most Difficult Games Ever
Contra Without the Code? So Not Happening
by Sarah
This morning, I happened to catch a new video from GameTrailers counting down the ten most difficult games of all time. I couldn’t help but wonder whether or not any of the challenging video games I had encountered in my lifetime would be represented. As it turns out, yes, several of the NES classics that reside in my collection but have never been beaten are notably hard. I actually feel a lot better about myself knowing that I’m not the only one never to finish The Adventure of Link. And don’t even get me started on Battletoads.
Check out the video for yourselves, or if you’re too lazy, I’ve got the full list for you below.
10. Contra (NES)
9. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (NES)
8. Castlevania (NES)
7. Devil May Cry 3 (PS2)
6. Shinobi (PS2)
5. Ikaruga (GameCube, XBLA)
4. F-Zero GX (GameCube)
3. Ninja Gaiden (series)
2. Ghouls & Ghosts (series)
1. Battletoads (NES)
So what do you think? Anything you definitely agree with? Is there anything not represented that you feel should make the list? I might have put Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels up there somewhere. I mean, a game that was not released in the U.S. because it was too hard? That game is a jerk!

Battlestoads was the hardest game ever. Solely for the "driving" sections. Those were a major BETCH.
#2, Ghouls & Ghosts... i still have nightmares about trying to beat that game and in fact I have tried recently and got OWNED
Double Dragon vs Battletoads should be on there.
Yo, remember Double Dragon 3? I still, honeslty, recall walking out of the first Dojo and getting my ass handed to me. Like, every single time. It was literally impossible.
Ikaruga?
Once you memorize the levels, learn to bullet eat, fire your charge at the perfect time, and get the highest chain possible on the 5 insanely difficult levels the games a cake walk.
Play it every night.
Zelda II and F-Zero GX were both banes of my existence. Having loved the original versions of both games, I had such high hopes. But they kicked my ass...
I think Magician Lord should be in that list, It's a pain in the ass and u die so easily. Also It took me 3 months to beat the Original DMC3 I'm so glad i got the special edition just to see those beautiful and awesome cutscenes. ^_^
Lol I'd go with Super Empire Strikes Back as like #3 or #2.It was a pain in the back side.Never played Battletoads but it looks pretty annoying in the video xD
Interesting list.
I definitely agree with Battletoads being #1 on that list -- I don't think I ever got past the second stage! I also forgot how hard Zelda II was, but it definitely deserves a spot up there.
