Guitar Hero: On Tour Sales Break Records
Who Would Have Guessed?

Activision sure loves their press releases, and we’re glad to pass them along to all of you fine people. Today, Activision sent out a release announcing that Guitar Hero: On Tour, the first handheld incarnation of the popular music game, has done extremely well in its first week of sales—so well, in fact, that it’s actually broken records.
According to the release, On Tour sold over 300,000 units in North America during its first week, making it “the largest North American launch for the Nintendo DS in the company’s history.” Whether that means Nintendo’s history or Activision’s is not made clear, however (although this news makes much more sense to me if we’re only talking Activision here). Also, On Tour is one of Activision’s top five launches ever—and that includes all games and platforms in the company’s history. Not bad at all! Hey, there are certainly worse games you could buy for the DS. (I’m looking at you, Ubisoft shovelware.)
The full press release can be found below.
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jul 03, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) today announced Guitar Hero(R): On Tour has sold in excess of 300,000 units in North America in the first seven days since its launch, making it the largest North American launch for the Nintendo DS(TM) in the company's history by more than a factor of eight. In addition, Guitar Hero: On Tour's performance ranks it as one of Activision's top 5 best-selling launches of any title on any platform in the company's history.
Guitar Hero: On Tour brings the popular Guitar Hero franchise to the handheld platforms for the first time delivering a unique gaming experience and challenging handheld gamers to prove their skills on the most diverse set list of master tracks ever offered in a Guitar Hero game.
"Guitar Hero is one of the most successful entertainment properties and continues to push the boundaries of innovation with Guitar Hero: On Tour," said Mike Griffith, President and Chief Executive Officer, Activision Publishing, Inc. "The game's breakthrough peripheral brings the Guitar Hero experience to the 41 million DS users in North America and Europe, where they can play anywhere, anytime."

I guess this was sort of to be expected; a popular franchise on a popualr console. Doesn't really come as a surprise to me.
I saw that coming too. Guitar Hero has a huge following, and it's rare to run into a gamer that doesn't have a DS.
I just wasn't sure how people would feel about dropping fifty bucks for a handheld Guitar Hero with fewer songs than the console versions. Guess that didn't make a difference, though.
I had the same mentality as Sarah, but it seems Guitar Hero fans will buy it anyway! If they like it, good for them. It's not for me.
