John Romero on ZeniMax Acquisition: “Disgusting”

Earlier today, it was announced that id Software, the developer behind the long-running Doom and Wolfenstein series, was being bought by ZeniMax, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks. Since Bethesda has made a number of critically acclaimed games, many felt that the merger would be promising for all parties involved. However, id cofounder and game designer John Romero feels otherwise, and he took to his Twitter today to announce his true feelings to the world in 140 characters or less.
He managed to sum up the news rather succinctly:
ZENIMAX??????? Disgusting.
Then, as I was writing this article, he struck again:
Fallout 3 bought DOOM. Wow.
Yeah, that’s it. Why does he hate ZeniMax? Who knows? Does his opinion matter? Not really. He has long since left id and went on to develop one of the worst games ever made. Since then, he’s kept a low profile, emerging once in a while to get married and divorced, and occasionally appearing in Penny Arcade strips. He may have helped to create some of the most influential games of all time, but that doesn’t give him an excuse to be a douche for no apparent reason. I know Fallout 3 was no Daikatana, but then again, what is?
