Japan Gets New Gamecube Controller For Wii
Oh, Nintendo...
by Sarah
The Gamecube, Nintendo’s last-generation console, is dead. Discontinued. Has been for some time, along with any accessories or peripherals that went along with it. That means if you want to get a first-party Gamecube controller, your options are pretty limited, unless your local GameStop has a healthy supply of used controllers in stock. Or you live in Japan.
Yes, even though Nintendo stopped making the Gamecube controllers for the actual system, they’re making a brand new one to be used with the Nintendo Wii. It’s pretty and white, like the system, and will cost the Japanese equivalent of about 20 bucks. Unfortunately, they didn’t change the ultra-short 3m cable, so enjoy sitting directly in front of your TV while using this, Japan.
Even though I’m a sucker for differently colored controllers (I already have four Gamecube controllers in varying colors), I think this is a really bad sign. As Coop and I have said before, Nintendo needs to stick to its motion-sensitive guns and not ditch the only thing that makes the system different in favor of Gamecube controller compatibility. Hopefully Nintendo intends for gamers to use the new controller for backwards-compatible and Virtual Console games, and not because they plan to release a lot more Wii games that support Gamecube controllers.
