Kingdom Hearts Keyblade Was Originally a Chainsaw
Also, Mickey Mouse Was Supposed to Be Freddy Kruger

While Tetsuya Nomura may not be quite ready to start thinking about Kingdom Hearts III, he’s not too busy to reminisce about the early days of the Kingdom Hearts series. In an interview translated by 1UP, Nomura divulges some interesting tidbits about the early days of brainstorming for the first game. Apparently, Square Enix wanted a game about Mickey Mouse, Disney wanted to feature Donald Duck, and Nomura didn’t want any pre-established character to be the star of the game, which resulted in the series we know and love. More surprising, though, is the fact that Nomura originally envisioned the main weapon of the series—the iconic keyblade—as a chainsaw instead.
This was clearly extremely early in development, as so much of the series is based around the symbolism of that keyblade, but Nomura stated, “the first weapon I showed Disney was a chainsaw. It was this chainsaw-like weapon that I had a rough sketch of when I first showed my concepts to Disney. Everyone got this scrunched-up look on their face and nobody said a word in the entire room. Dead silence. And I thought ‘No, I guess this wouldn't work, huh?’”
As funny as it is to think of Sora (and in KHII, just about everyone else… spoiler alert) running around with chainsaws blazing, I’m glad Nomura went with the keyblade instead. Otherwise, Kingdom Hearts would have been a completely different experience. Also, Nomura: Kingdom Hearts III. Can you get on that, please?
