Left 4 Dead 2’s Portal Reference is a Triumph

We’re Out of Beta, We’re Releasing on Time

Even though Portal is now over two years old, references to the game’s brilliant theme song, “Still Alive”, are still running rampant in the gaming industry and other aspects of geek culture. Some people might be sick of constantly hearing “I’m making a note here, huge success”, but personally? Any reference to Portal or its theme makes me smile. With Valve’s next big game, Left 4 Dead 2, due out in a couple of weeks, it appears that the developers couldn’t help but sneak in a reference to one of the best games of 2007, as seen in the video below.

I don’t know about you, but to me lyrics like “And when you’re dead I’ll be still alive” take on a whole new meaning when you’re fighting the zombie apocalypse. I hope this was near the end of a level, because it would be epically fitting during the last stand against the undead--and I would unquestionably annoy the hell out of my teammates by singing loudly (and poorly) into my headset. Also, can we get some more Portal references? Because the Portal gun in Left 4 Dead 2 would be freaking great. Well done, Valve. It’s hard to overstate my satisfaction.

Okay, I’m done now.

    That's awesome.

It also puts a whole new spin on the song, as if GlaDoS knew about the zombie outbreak.
