LucasArts Classics Coming to Virtual Console

Maniac Mansion Confirmed?!

by Sarah

As you may have read in this morning’s Nintendo Shop Update, Super Star Wars hit the Virtual Console today, with Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi coming in the near future. The Wii-makers were so excited about the addition of the LucasArts SNES trilogy that they sent out a separate press release about it, which I thought was, maybe, a bit overzealous. Then, as I was about to expel the email from my inbox, I saw this statement:

Additional classic LucasArts games for Virtual Console will be announced in the future.

Naturally, this could mean any number of LucasArts games, but you know where my mind immediately went: point-and-click adventures! Though most LucasArts adventure classics appeared on the PC, several got ports for other systems, like the Commodore 64 and NES (both of which are emulated through the Virtual Console). In fact, Maniac Mansion appeared on both consoles in addition to computers, so it stands to reason that this game could, in fact, finally be coming to the Virtual Console after nearly three long years of waiting.

Another possibility is that Nintendo will once again expand the Virtual Console to include older PC games—or that this doesn’t refer to adventure games at all, and was simply meant as a cruel tease. With the current revival of point-and-click favorites, though, it makes sense that the publisher would want to jump on the bandwagon. Hopefully more information is coming soon.

I'm pretty sure I will find The Super Star Wars Series to be just as difficult as I remember.
