New Super Mario Bros. Wii Surpasses Mario Galaxy in Sales

2D > 3D

It's not like we didn't all know New Super Mario Bros. Wii was going to sell like hotcakes, but even so, it's still a little surprising that the game has sold so many copies so quickly. After climbing sales charts nonstop since its November release, NSMBW has now officially surpassed the previous Mario Wii game, with 4.2 million units sold in the U.S., compared to 4.1 million for Super Mario Galaxy. Considering that Galaxy was a critical darling and loved by fans, it's even more impressive that New Super Mario Bros. Wii overtook the two-year-plus-old title in less than two months.

Sure, there are more Wiis in more homes now than there were in late 2007, but I would still assume that Super Mario Galaxy should be a must-buy for any new owner of the system. I guess it's much harder to resist the appeal of a classic 2D Mario game, especially one that invokes nostalgia by taking familiar elements from some of the best games in the series. Congrats, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, though don't get too comfy--Super Mario Galaxy 2 is supposedly due out later this year. Then again, Nintendo may already be cooking up another four-player extravaganza--if I may, how about some different playable characters? Perhaps Waluigi?
