UPDATED: New Zelda Game for DS Coming This Year

Tentatively Called The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Now With Trailer

by Sarah

What is the one thing Nintendo fans have been hoping to hear an announcement about since, oh, their E3 press conference last year? A new game in one of their key franchises, namely Mario or Zelda. (And maybe a better storage solution for the Wii, but if you haven’t heard, that’s been taken care of.) Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata shocked the gaming press today by announcing a new Legend of Zelda title for the Nintendo DS.

UPDATE: A new trailer has emerged, which immediately reminded me how much fun I had playing Phantom Hourglass. Suddenly, I'm a bit more excited.

The game, tentatively subtitled Spirit Tracks, appears to be in the same visual style as Phantom Hourglass, the last handheld Zelda title. It will apparently be released later this year, and will see our hero Link ditching boats for trains. Not much else is known about the game, but with a 2009 release window, I’m guessing it won’t be long until Nintendo starts sending out press releases, so we’ll keep you updated.

Show of hands, anyone excited? Tentatively excited? Peeing your pants excited? What’s the consensus?

I'm intrigued. I like the direction Zelda is taking. Like it's moving towards something new, towards change. Only time will tell, though.

While I love the idea that there will soon be a new Zelda game to play, I'm disappointed that it's going to the DS. This marks two DS Zelda games, and zero for the Wii (don't forget that Twilight Princess was a GameCube port).

There will be a big Zelda announcement for the Wii at E3. You can count on that.

I just hope you will be able to exit the train and free roam. Every picture (that doesn't appear to be from a cutscene) has Link in the train. This better not be some lame, non-open-world version of Zelda.

yes, raccoonacorn, there will be an announcement about a new zelda game at e3. followed by an announcement at the next GDC that the game has been delayed. followed by an announcement at the next e3 that the game will be out in time for Easter 2011.

I wouldn't even mind if it came out in 2011.

To put it in Coop's words:

    Twilight Princess: OMG A WOLF
    Phantom Hourglass: OMG A BOAT
    Spirit Tracks: OMG A TRAIN

So Tim, next up: The Legend of Zelda: OMG A HOT AIR BALLOON
