Tentatively titled The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, the game looked to be a successor to Phantom Hourglass, which was excellent. There are few things that gamers agree on, but one of them is that a new Zelda game is pretty much going to be a good thing.

However, a statement on Nintendo’s just-released financial report is making me much more nervous than I should be about Spirit Tracks: that it “will appeal to a wider age group of people”. First of all, “wider” compared to what? Nintendo doesn’t say. A wider age group than previous Zelda games, or a wider age group than most hardcore games? What do you mean?! Secondly, doesn’t the Zelda series already appeal to a pretty large age group? I mean, most people in my age range have been playing these games since early childhood, and new generations of gamers are getting in on the Triforce action as well. How do you get much wider than that?

Dear Nintendo: please don’t fuck this up. I know you’re making bazillions of dollars off of little kids and the elderly, but I need this. Gamers need a good first-party Nintendo title. I need to believe there is still good in the video game publisher I was practically raised by. Don’t give me watered-down crap, Nintendo. Please.
