Nintendo: New Zelda Game Will Appeal to "Wider Audience"

Wider Than Zelda Fans?!

by Sarah

Nintendo has not exactly been beloved by the oft-scorned “core gamers” recently, but one of the publisher’s GDC announcements back in February made everyone happy: a new Zelda game is coming to the DS later this year. Tentatively titled The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, the game looked to be a successor to Phantom Hourglass, which was excellent. There are few things that gamers agree on, but one of them is that a new Zelda game is pretty much going to be a good thing.

However, a statement on Nintendo’s just-released financial report is making me much more nervous than I should be about Spirit Tracks: that it “will appeal to a wider age group of people”. First of all, “wider” compared to what? Nintendo doesn’t say. A wider age group than previous Zelda games, or a wider age group than most hardcore games? What do you mean?! Secondly, doesn’t the Zelda series already appeal to a pretty large age group? I mean, most people in my age range have been playing these games since early childhood, and new generations of gamers are getting in on the Triforce action as well. How do you get much wider than that?

Dear Nintendo: please don’t fuck this up. I know you’re making bazillions of dollars off of little kids and the elderly, but I need this. Gamers need a good first-party Nintendo title. I need to believe there is still good in the video game publisher I was practically raised by. Don’t give me watered-down crap, Nintendo. Please.

@loltim: Your passion for Zelda makes me happy. And now that you mention it, I DO remember them talking about that game like three goddamn years ago!

"Wider Audience" = Childrens' game. Mark my words.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that you can't fuck up a Zelda game - unless it's on the Philips CDi.

    "Wider Audience" = Fatter people

I'm sorry, I had to say it.

Sooooo... What's wider than "everybody?" Martians? Do they plan on grabbing the extra-terrestrial market as well?

I haven't really played a Zelda game I liked since the N64. I dislike Wind Waker and anything associated with it. Last year I traded in Phantom Hourglass after 5 hours of gameplay. I disliked it very much. Nintendo has a lot of convincing to do if they want me to buy this game (or even give it more than a glancing look).

Except for maybe Twilight Princess I just haven't re-bought it yet.

I didn't love Phantom Hourglass, but apart from that, I've loved every one in the series, including the CDi. Even if it is a "kids' game" as Veggie predicts, it'll still be a Zelda game, and thus, awesome.

From the videos i've seen, looks to be just another phatom hourglass clone with a train.... and maybe a few new gadgets but... woo big deal... I just don't see there being much more room to expand the zelda series with.
