Nintendo: No MMOs, Let it Go

Massively Multiplayer Games Aren't Accessible Enough

by Sarah

It’s been rumored for a little while that the next Animal Crossing game that Nintendo puts out could be a massively multiplayer online title. Nintendo has finally put those rumors to rest, stating that not only would Animal Crossing not be an MMO, but that they were not planning to release any games of this kind.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has given a reason for this, stating that he would only want to make such a game if it could appeal to a wide demographic, meaning gamers of all ages. So never say never, but until the time comes when MMOs are popular with pre-schoolers and senior citizens, Nintendo’s probably not going to go there.

Personally, I try to stay as far away from MMOs as possible. Not because I don’t like them, but because I have succumbed to their addictiveness in my younger days and don’t want to do it again. I don’t think Nintendo has any burning need to release a massively multiplayer game, and Animal Crossing has always done well in its current format. Then again, Joystiq makes a good point by saying that a Pokemon MMO would fit the genre perfectly. Maybe someday.
