NYCC 09: Eyes-On Uncharted 2
Marco? Polo!
by Sarah
Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune is undoubtedly one of my favorite PS3 games, and Uncharted 2 is one of my most anticipated games of the year. You can imagine my joy and surprise, then, when we arrived at the Sony’s PlayStation NYC Cocktail Reception to find that Uncharted 2 was among the upcoming Sony games that we could get a look at. Unfortunately, it was not playable at this stage, but I did spend a good chunk of time watching a live demo of the game.
The first thing I noticed is how different the environments look when compared to the first game. In Drake’s Fortune, most outdoor levels were sent in the lush, green jungle, and there wasn’t a whole lot of variation. In Uncharted 2, however, Nathan makes his way through decaying towns, sneaking up buildings and other structures. I imagine that this will bring a great deal of variation to the look of the game, in addition to making the sequel a fully realized experience instead of another romp through the jungle.
It’s also apparent that a lot of work went into making Uncharted 2 look fantastic. Don’t get me wrong, Drake’s Fortune was a great-looking game, but the details in the environments that I saw in Uncharted 2 were wonderful. I imagine, or at least hope, that it will look even better when it is polished and put on store shelves later this year. I happened to noticed that grenades were not being controlled with the SixAxis motion sensitive controls in this demo (that was the bane of my existence in the first game), but the Sony rep playing the game said that they were “keeping their options open”. My guess is that the player will now get the option to turn motion sensitive controls on or off.
As a big fan of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, I thought Uncharted 2 looked really promising. I know it's early yet, but I think this is going to be one of the best games of 2009. I’m probably even more excited for it now than I was before going to the Sony party today. I only wish I had actually gotten to play it. Maybe next time.
