NYCC 09: Gabe and Tycho Spotlight Live!
I'm about to head upstairs to catch up with Mike and Jerry on the floor. If you're just tuning in, start at the bottom and work your way up for a recap of Saturday's Gabe and Tycho Spotlight at New York Comic Con 2009.
1:28 - Any games after Precipice? A TURN-BASED PING PONG GAME! They'd love to though, it's just really hard. Maybe something smaller scale.
1:27 - "This one's for Jerry--" Mike: "Oh, bullshit! We're doing one more after this."
1:27 - Some comics they didn't think were going to be a hit? Cardboard Tube Samurai and Twisp and Catsby. T&C rule!
1:26 - What is the goal of Child's Play in the next few years? Their goal was to raise a million dollars, but then they accomplished it, so they don't really make goals anymore.
1:25 - What kind of game would they like to see developed? A turn-based ping pong game based on Paint the Line. Sounds AWESOME.
1:20 - Someone asks about their disagreements with GameStop over putting Rain-Slick in their stores. Has that stopped them from shopping there? Not really.
1:18 - What game surprised them most in 2008, and what are they most looking forward to in 2009? Mike's surprise: Resistance 2, he didn't expect it to be a great game. Jerry loved Valkyria Chronicles. I cheer. Right now they're really looking forward to Killzone 2.
1:16 - Why don't they make comics about other current events when there's no gaming news? "It just doesn't interest us."
1:15 - Why has there been more continuity lately? In the most recent case, it's because they were here at NYCC. In the case of the Witchalok story, it's because gaming news was really boring at the time.
1:14 - What game are they most looking forward to making fun of in 2009? "We don't really go in like 'oh man, I can't wait to shit all over that one'." They want games to be awesome, so right now they're just excited.
1:13 - Do they read their forums at all? "I read the new comic threads sometimes... that place is scary."
1:11 - Do they have a design or creative team working for them? Jerry laughs. "It's all outsourced to China." They talk about the Penny Arcade office as a whole: Amber, who runs PAX; Paul, who runs the store; Mike and Robert, who do the business end, etc. But creatively, it's up to the two of them.
1:09 - Who has the watch? "We never remember who has the watch."
1:06 - As gaming parents, do they have a plan in place to filter content for their kids? "If you're familiar with games, it's not hard to know what's appropriate for a four-year-old and what isn't." The problems come from parents knowing nothing about video games. "When we get the reigns of this culture, that stupid bullshit is going to go away."
1:04 - Favorite games of all time? Mike's PC game: Warcraft. Console game: Kingdom Hearts 2. Wow, that's a bit of a surprise, but I support it. Jerry loves Silent Hill 2 and Wasteland.
1:03 - Where did the strip about Claw Shrimp come from? About a real-life argument about these "proto-lobster things". Jerry wanted to stab Mike, so in the world of comics that's the direction it took.
1:02 - Oh shit, someone just called Mike "Jerry". Everyone boos.
1:01 - Will there be more Raven Blood besides in the game? "I hadn't thought about it... we don't really plan ahead."
1:00 - What are their views on the webcomic scene? "We don't really pay attention to it."
12:58 - Someone asks about their advertising policy, and how they only have ads for stuff that they like. Do they reject a lot of advertising? Yes, they actually refuse more than they take. If they're asking you to click on an ad and check it out, it should be worth checking out.
12:57 - Will there be more Cthulu stuff? Yes, they love that stuff, and would love to write more like that.
12:55 - Gabe and Tycho weren't designed to be Mike and Jerry, they just needed some characters to say dialogue for webcomic contests. Over time, of course, the characters have evolved a bit.
12:54 - What are your favorite strips, and why? "Honestly, the recent one is always my favorite." Especially since Gabe is in a New Kids on the Block shirt. They also liked the recent Sorcelation storyline.
12:53 - Where did Frank come from? There is a Frank! I love Frank. He is based on someone, "a fucking prick", who worked at a Software Etc. in Washington.
12:51 - They had an idea for a self-help book with comics in it called "Oh noes!" Like, "Oh noes, my girlfriend's pregnant!" Sounds like the best self-help book ever.
12:51 - What webcomics do they read? PvP, Copper, Achewood.
12:49 - Was there any reaction to the Jeff Gerstmann firing comic? Not really, but they did hear about it happening before the story broke, and they later got a cryptic email from Jeff thanking them without confirming anything.
12:48 - They have poked fun at G4 in the past, but they were at PAX, so are things cool now? They wouldn't deny people coming to PAX that gamers might want to see, even if they're not the biggest fans.
12:47 - What characters do you love, that you wish the audience would love more? "The Kansas City Hotsteppers."
12:46 - More Songs of Sorcelation? "Yeah, we have to know what happens with those Witchalok blades."
12:44 - Will there be a Paint the Line 3? "Gabe goes rogue."
12:43 - Why did Tycho put his niece in the strip? Is she real? Tycho's "niece" is actually a combination of Gabe's real-life nieces. Also, the strip where Tycho comes out of his bedroom wrapped in a blanket? True story, but it happened to Gabe in real life.
12:43 - Where does their sense of violence come from? "It comes from the voices."
12:42 - Were there any strips they worked on and thought went too far, and then didn't post? "I don't think we've ever not posted. There's some we thought we went too far on... and then posted anyway."
12:37 - What is their relationship with game companies like, since they're not always kind to games? "Most of them just laugh, and even when they don't, they're still rich." They have a pretty good understanding with a lot of publishers, even if they shit on their games.
12:36 - How do games get chosen for Greenhouse? They play every game that is submitted, or just submit games themselves if they think people should know about them.
12:34 - Is there a good story behind Fruit Fucker? "I don't know if it's a good one." It actually came from seeing a construction machine and calling it a car-fucker. "That's probably made by something that makes all kinds of fucking devices, Fucker Co. Fruit Fucker is just one of their products."
12:32 - How much of the comic is based on their real lives? "The velociraptor rape is 100% true."
12:31 - As a new DM, how often does Gabe fudge things? "A lot!" He asks if that's bad and if he's supposed to. A resounding "yeah" from the audience.
12:29 - When do you find time to play games? Part of their 9 to 5 job involves playing games, but they also have very understanding wives. "They endure us."
12:28 - PAX Boston, March 2010.
12:27 - Q&A is beginning. Why isn't the podcast more regular? "We're lazy." But they will try to be better.
12:25 - Mike and Jerry (Gabe and Tycho) have entered to huge applause.
12:18 - Wow, that line outside was huge, and they're all filing in now. It's going to be a packed house. The whole convention center is ridiculously crowded, actually. Luckily I'm right near the front and ready for the festivities to begin.
Welcome to the Gabe and Tycho spotlight! I just jumped in front of several hundred people in line, so I'm pretty sure everyone in this room hates me. Anyway, stay with us for the next hour and keep hitting that refresh button as we bring you all the shenanigans live from New York Comic Con.
