Other Retailers Looking at Trade-ins, GameStop Stock Drops
Where Would You Trade in Games?
by Sarah

A few days ago, it was revealed that Toys R Us would be getting into the used games market by accepting trade-ins. Since then, it has become apparent that Amazon.com and Best Buy are also jumping on the bandwagon. And why wouldn’t they? GameStop has been making big money with their trades and used game sales, and during a recession, gamers are going to try and save cash any way they can. So what does GameStop, who may no longer have such an overwhelming monopoly on the practice, think about this? CEO Dan DeMatteo had this to say about the Amazon plan: “I give the probability of this working at zero.”
DeMatteo’s confidence didn’t stop GameStop’s stocks from plunging 13% following Amazon’s announcement, and I’m sure the other retailers offering similar programs hasn’t helped the company either. However, I really have to wonder: is anyone going to go through all the trouble of mailing in their trades to Amazon, to get maybe only a couple of dollars more on each game? Also, Amazon has put some stipulations on their trade-ins that may turn gamers off, like having to have the box and manual, and the game having to be above $10 in value. That’s not an issue for newer games, of course, but when it comes time for spring cleaning, gamers are probably going to look elsewhere.
I don’t trade in many games, personally. I’m a collector, and tend to only buy things I want to keep forever as far as video games go. However, as a former GameStop employee, I know that there are plenty of gamers that trade every game they buy right back in to get store credit to put towards the next big release. I also know that GameStop isn’t exactly beloved among the gaming community. With Toys R Us and Best Buy also working on trade-in programs, what would you do? If you trade in games, does this change things in any way for you?

Toys R Us Gets in on Game Trade-ins

HAHAHAHAHA #&@* YOU GS! I'm totally gonna trade in games somewhere else. Beings that there's a LIMITED amount of people I like to talk/trade in games to. (KT at BnJ GS) Hopefully they offer better deals.
If I'm trading my games in, I'm going to a brick and mortar store. Usually, this means GameStop, but now that Toys R Us and Best Buy are getting in on the act, I would be willing to take an extra few minutes before heading out to the store to see who would give me the most value for my trades.
Hell yeah, I mean it was such BS that they buy your game for $5 and then re-sell it for the new price discounted $5.
I work for Bestbuy and the used games sku's have been in our network for years, I think some stores in the midwest have been doing this actively for a while
anywhere but gamestop though i am trying not to trade in anything
I recently opened my own Amazon store in the marketplace. Sold Fable II in less than an hour, and made twice as much as the trade-in value! As for other games, I'm putting a hold on any trades. But I am going to be selling some Anime and memorabilia soon! Actually, I've already posted Gun Frontier and Ninja Scroll: The Series for sale.
So, as for this posting about trade-ins, I'd rather never trade in any games to Gamestop anyway. The only bonus is that if you have the Edge card you get an extra 10% (whatever that really means) on both trade-ins and purchasing used titles.
I'd rather just take my business elsewhere, thanks to this new addition to consumers.
((I'm sorry for advertising. Just wanted to "strut my stuff" for a second because my head is a little enlarged at the moment.))
I check out Amazon's and Gamefly's and neither store gave much more than Gamestop's w/o trade deals. The entire used game market is a scam, anyway, no matter where it is.
