PAX 08: Hands-On Guitar Hero: World Tour

So About This New Drumset...

by Sarah

One of the first things I did today when the press were allowed onto the show floor at PAX was check out Guitar Hero: World Tour. I know what you're going to say: I'm been hating on Guitar Hero all year, so why would I want to play the next installment in the music franchise? Truth is, I remember that I used to be a huge Guitar Hero fan, and nothing would make me happier than to see this series return to glory. Is this the game I've been waiting for? Results are inconclusive.

I didn't get to test out all of Guitar Hero: World Tour's features or use the new guitar, as I only got to sit in on one song and, naturally, I went right for the drums. I was very curious about that new drumset, with the three pads, two symbols, and a pedal, so I had to try it out. The result was that it was harder than I expected. I don't know if it's because the game is more difficult than Rock Band, or I just wasn't used to the new set, but it just didn't have the natural feeling that playing the Rock Band drums for the first time did.

That being said, I love a challenge, and would like to spend more time with that drumset in the future. Maybe after a few more songs, I would have felt a little more confident in my drumming skills. It's not enough to make me want to get World Tour over Rock Band 2, but I'm not writing this series off completely... at least, not yet.

Guitar Hero: World Tour will be out October 27, and is appearing on the 360, PS3, Wii, and PS2. I hope to get my hands on this some more before then, so I will keep you updated on all the gameplay aspects World Tour has to offer.

I'll probably pick this up sometime early next year. Way too many other, cheaper games coming out.

I'm slowly being overrun with plastic instruments.
