PAX 08: Penny Arcade Make-a-Strip LIVE!

This Should Be Interesting...

by Sarah

Here we are, back again in the main auditorium to watch Mike and Jerry (you know... Gabe and Tycho) generally be awesome. We're making a strip today, and I'm not quite sure what that will entail, but I'm excited to find out. Keep hitting that refresh button.

2:30: That wraps it up for the strip-making! Check Penny Arcade late Monday to see the finished product.

2:30: Are they going to do anything special for their tenth anniversary? Either a nice book collection, or going to Chuck E Cheese.

2:29: "In the last panel, why is Gabe wearing a shirt?" "Good point. I should probably take that out."

2:27: They're unfortunately out of time, but they may later add Jonathan Coulton in the third panel, wearing some sort of bathrobe. I'm guessing you'll see the strip on Penny Arcade sometime early next week.

2:26: Dialogue is going into the comic strip now.

2:23: Would they have any objections to someone doing a live-action Armadeaddon or Paint the Line? Nah.

2:20: Will Jesus make an appearance of the games? "He doesn't really fit in the continuity."

2:19: Are there any characteristics of evil men in their business? "Often the business suits are a giveaway."

2:16: Had a little internet hiccup, seems to be okay now. The strip looks almost finished, and Jerry is singing.

2:10: The chick is now a redhead. I'm hoping someone in line to ask a question asks about Frank or Div. Possibly a strip with both of them.

2:08: Can they make the chick in the comic a redhead? "It's possible." She brings Mike a little Chimchar. Aww.

2:06: What was the coolest thing ever auctioned off for Child's Play? A trip to Iceland.

2:04: The color is going into the comic strip! Also, they reference one of my all-time favorite PA strips where they flip off a box of kittens and punch a baby.

2:04: Why is there no ping pong table at PAX? Yeah, why? They wouldn't get any work done. I hear that.

2:02: Is next year's PAX going to be all of downtown Seattle, since it seems to double every year? They're going to try to rent out the top floor of the convention center as well next year.

2:00: Someone wants them to bring the Firefly people out to PAX, since it seems to be a 1:1 ratio of PA fans and Firefly fans. Agreed!

1:56: Is Cthulu going to make another appearance anytime soon? "That's almost certain."

1:55: Someone wants 28 more Bogey Golf strips. "I don't think anyone else even cares about that."

1:53: Where did "Birds are Weird" come from? They saw a bird, said "birds are weird", and it became a title for one of their trades.

1:50: Tycho's jealous eyes are pretty funny. They get erased and Mike tries again.

1:48: What happens when the Deepcrow meets the Fruit Fucker? If they did it, it would be a full-on fan service like Armadeaddon... but no real answer was given on whether or not that would happen.

1:48: The audience decides that Tycho should look jealous in the last frame.

1:46: An audience member who previously brought them chocolates wants to know if they made it to the guys' wives. "Yes!" "NO!" Mike: "My wife is allergic to chocolate." Mike's wife: "NOT EVEN!"

1:44: How do they feel about webcomics that focus more on writing and less on art, "maybe using stick figures?" Jerry says if he was drawing, it would look worse than XKCD. Mike says he'd never begrudge anyone their success, but he has a hard time reading those because he likes to read comics for the art.

1:43: The organizers of Desert Bus for Hope says that they're bringing it to Seattle this November, and ask the guys to come drive for an hour. "Absolutely." This marathon previously organized $22,000 for charity.

1:41: Someone says that they resemble the "I'm a Mac/I'm a PC" guys. "So if each of you were to try to sell me a computer..."

1:39: They're telling the story of when their comic got picked up by Loonygames back in 98, and their eventual split from them, which helped lead them to where they are today.

1:36: Oh, this is adorable. Mike's son Gabe comes onstage and hugs his dad.

1:34: Shows some art Mike drew for Prince of Persia. It's lovely.

1:32: Someone wants to know what happened to PATV. Mike says that his computer is constantly unstable. Audience member: "GET A FUCKING MAC!" Yeah, tell that to the people at Gamervision HQ whose Macs keep flipping out.

1:31: Mike writes "twatvomit" on the screen. They love that word! Moms try to cover the eyes of their kids.

1:30: Could they call the multiple PAX conventions in 2010 the "Paxis of Evil"? They love it.

1:29: A chick asks a question about pirates and ninjas, is booed.

1:29: Someone in the audience tells oregano guy to stop doing crack.

1:28: Do they have any recipes using oregano? "I would put it on food." "Any particular food?" "Snickers."

1:27: The strip is coming along nicely. Tycho is getting his sideburns.

1:25: Apparently, the Caramilks from yesterday were poison, and some dude offers them the antidote if they'll mail him his badge next year so he doesn't have to wait in line.

1:24: An audience member asks the guys to sign his Wacom tablet.

1:24: Someone wants to set up an arranged marriage between his little goddaughter and little Gabe, and wants to know what kind of dowry would be involved.

1:22: Jerry and Mike don't know who Dr. Manahattan is. Scott Kurtz: "Dr. Manhattan is a character from Alan Moore's The Watchmen, you fucking noob."

1:20: A former Omeganaut wants to know why this year's Omeganauts have t-shirts. Jerry: "We love them more."

1:18: Mike is drawing away, it's neat to watch. We will have a full video of this later so you can see the creative process at work.

1:16: Someone wants to know why they don't see Thomas Temper anymore. It's because the cat that Thomas was based off of had to be returned to the animal shelter and it was really depressing for them.

1:14: We see the sketches for this strip. Jerry answers questions from the audience while Mike works on the artwork.

1:13: Frame 2: The trailer door opens. Out comes a woman in a Jonathan Coulton shirt, a robot, and in Frame 3, Gabe, giving a double thumbs-up.

1:12: Jerry types "Tycho Brahe stands outside of a vigorously rocking trailer. That trailer... is Jonathan Coulton's." Tycho informs Coulton that they need him for a soundtrack.

1:10: Finally! Gabe and Tycho come onstage and bring up an empty page that says "Frame 1".

1:04: Someone onstage is yelling at the late-comers to hurry up and find a seat, because we're about to get started. Woohoo!

1:03: I think I just spotted Wil Wheaton hanging out near the stage.

1:01: I haven't eaten yet today, and I am very, very hungry. People around me are eating, it smells good. How many hours until dinner?

12:55: Tim has set up the camera over the head of a child, who thinks Tim is lame. Haha. Just kidding, the people in front of us are cool.

Kurtz is actually a giant prick who I lost any respect for due to his poor treatment and actions towards other artists like DJ Coffman.
