PS3 Slim Confirmed, PS3 Gets Price Drop
Available First Week of September
by Sarah

In a move that surprised absolutely no one, Sony went ahead and officially announced the PS3 Slim at their Gamescom Press Conference in Germany today. Kaz Hirai took the stage to show it off, and stated that it would launch worldwide the first week of September. It’s smaller and lighter than the current PS3, but has all the same features. Not interested yet? Well, how about this: the PS3 Slim will launch at a nice $299 price point, and all PS3s currently in stores are getting a price drop… right now. Current 80-gig models will also be $299, with the 160GB PS3 going for $400 until it sells out, at which point the 120-gig PS3 Slim will be the only SKU for the console.
Okay, is anyone actually surprised by this? Probably not, but the price drop should at least help sales for Sony’s system, and now everyone can stop speculating about this long-running rumor. Here's my question, though: who the hell would buy an 80-gig PS3 for $300 when you can get a 120GB slim in a couple of weeks? Those things are going to be sitting in GameStop stock rooms for a long time. Expect to hear more, including a more firm North American release date, shortly.

I like the new look, maybe even enough to upgrade, as long as it has backwards compatibility.
So does that mean the 160GB/Uncharted bundle is $299? I wish they would have added a IR port to the slim.
unconvinced a slim model was necessary. the price drop should be the news, but for some reason, everywhere else considers it a minor bit of the OH MY GOD ITS A SLIM!!!! hype.
@shagino: I updated my article with more info, after initially saying "PS3s are $300 now!" it was revealed that the 160-gig is still $399.
@Sarah: Well, that's silly. Totally agree with you about 80 GB model. They should have dropped the existing ones to $279 or something. I totally would have got one for my sister if the 160GB was $299 though.
No Spider-Man 3 font = a purchase for me. Finally, they got rid of the ugly text on the top of the system. And are those ACTUAL BUTTONS by the disc slot?!
