PSPgo Will Not Allow Users to Transfer UMDs

Sony Spits on PSP Owners

by Sarah

Hey, PSP owner! Were you thinking about maybe getting a PSPgo? It's a bit pricey, but you can probably manage it if you sell off your current PSP, right? But then, what will you do with all of your games? After all, the PSPgo doesn't support UMDs, opting instead for digital distribution. Sony has to offer some kind of option for transferring the PSP games you've already paid hard-earned money for over to the PSPgo, right? Don't they?

No, they do not.

Speaking with Kotaku at Tokyo Game Show, a Sony Computer Entertainment spokesperson said that they were "evaluating a UMD conversion program, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time". So, basically, if you already have a PSP, and were hoping to get a PSPgo, you have two options: hold on to your old system, or let it go, get rid of all of your games, and buy the ones you really want all over again.

This probably won't have any effect on those who don't already own PSPs and want to get a PSPgo, but since Sony was hoping current PSP owners would trade up come October 1, this has got to be really discouraging to some gamers. It's kind of a huge "fuck you" to Sony's most loyal fanboys, the ones who have been keeping up with every model of the PSP and were looking forward to a new one.

It's one thing when a new generation begins and the latest consoles don't have backwards compatibility, but this isn't the same thing. The PSPgo is just a new iteration of the PSP, much like the DSi was to the DS Lite. Yes, the DSi got rid of the GBA slot, but the Game Boy Advance was discontinued years ago. It seems like Sony is basically shitting on its own format, and I'm wondering if UMDs will cease to exist entirely in the near future.

In less than 2 hours, I went from not wanting a PSP Go to kinda maybe wanting a PSP Go if I could get my games in digital format. I really like the slim design of the go, but if I have to buy every game I own (I have 5) over I don't know how I'll feel about it. It's not that big a deal for me because I have only 5 games, but what about those that have a lot more? I can see them hating sony soon.

@Mikhailov: When the PSPgo was first announced I was definitely considering it. Eventually I decided it wasn't economical because I have a perfectly great PSP 2000, and now I'm really glad that I didn't have my heart set on it. I have about 10 or 11 PSP games--far less than I have for the 360, PS3, or Wii, but still about $400-$500 worth of games. To render them obsolete during the same generation is really insulting.

The more I hear about the Go, the less I want one. $250? Yeah, no.

this is crap. i have a bunch of PSP games, and i'm not likely to drop all that cash on a new system AND THEN have to re-buy my games all over again. i call foul, sony.

@Sarah: Yeah the only reason I'm even considering it is because my library is so low. To upgrade wouldn't hurt me all that much. If I had more than a few games like you, and the majority of PSP owners, I would also feel equally insulted.

They need to step up their game or they'll risk losing a large fan base...I mean what will happen when they ditch the UMD completely? Those who don't have PSP Go are now screwed because they won't have the storage space.

So it doesn't have a mini-Disc player either? Thanks again Sony. You are the worst.
