Rare Wants Avatar Accessories to Be Handed Out Like Achievements

Achievement Unlocked: New Sweater Vest

by Sarah

Ever since the New Xbox Experience launched last year complete with Rare-designed Avatars, reactions to the virtual personas have been mixed. Sure, they’re okay to tool around with when you’re bored, but overall kind of pointless. Then again, the same thing might be said about achievement points—nice to show off and brag about, but ultimately, they don’t have any effect on gameplay other than giving the gamer a nice sense of satisfaction. Most 360 owners, whether they want to admit it or not, love hearing that “achievement unlocked” sound. So what if you could unlock new clothing and accessories for your Avatar the same way you do achievement points? Would you care more about Avatars then?

According to Rare, that just may be an option in the future. VG247 reports that Rare is working with several companies (they weren’t specific about whether these “partners” were publishers or developers) to install unlockable Avatar swag in certain games at some point in the future. Rare’s Lee Musgrave stated that “In time… games will be able to give away clothes and accessories just like Achievements.”

It’s definitely an interesting concept, but I don’t know if it will make me want to change up my Avatar (I’ve only gone into the character edit screen a couple of times since the NXE launched). Still, I prefer unlockable items to paying actual money for them, which I would never do. If this is an alterative to Microsoft nickel-and-diming 360 owners with “premium” Avatar accessories, then I welcome it.

Well, at least it would make achievements "worth" something instead of just being there ;)

I liked "The Maw" unlocking gamer pictures with achievements though.

See, for some reason I thought I remembered hearing this when they were first announced. Like, for example, when you beat Ninja Gaiden you'd get like a ninja outfit or mask or something.

I think this could be a good way to get myself some avatar accessories without shelling out precious to do so. Although if Rare intends for this to replace Achievements, I have to say NOOOOOOOO!

I can't find any evidence to back up my claim. I guess I made it up or something.

I read about this early yesterday. I think it's an awesome idea. Especially from RARE. Think about it. I'd totally rock a Conker fuzzy tail, lol.

@NickDynmo: I don't remember hearing about the Ninja Gaiden thing, but I DO recall a LONG time ago them saying that you will be able to unlock clothing from certain completed tasks in games.
