Skate 2 Requires a 2GB Install on PS3

Time to Clear Some Space... Again

by Sarah

If you’re a multiple system owner like myself, there are probably several factors that dictate whether to buy the 360 or PS3 version of a multiplatform game. For some, it’s the achievements that do it, while others go for the better-looking version. Personally, I usually want the one that is less glitchy, but another factor has been determining my system preference this year: mandatory installs. PS3 installs have become fairly common over the last twelve months or so, and upcoming anticipated extreme sports game Skate 2 will be no exception.

Skate 2
will feature a 2GB install on the PS3, which isn’t too bad when compared to some of the other installs PS3 owners have had to deal with recently. There’s no word on how this compares to the 360’s optional install, which are usually 5 or 6 gigs themselves, but at least then you have the choice. Since my PS3’s 60-gig hard drive is getting more and more filled every day, it looks like I will be picking up Skate 2 on the 360 instead. Man, remember when 60 gigs seemed like a lot of space?

will be down to 14GB with this purchase... i never have like the mandatory installs, should always be an optional thing in my mind.

its too bad too because it is pushing some multi-platformers over to the 360 console because of the optional install, which sucks cause now Sarah and I cant have a trick contest :(

Just upgrade. I started with a 60 gig system and bought a $100 250gig HDD at BestBuy.

Go with the 250gig SATA. Easy install, no need to worry about space ever again. Being able to upgrade the ps3 in this way craps all over microsofts proprietary bullshit.

At some point I will probably have to upgrade. It will be nice to get a hard drive so big it makes my 360's 120-gig look like nothing

but what about all the save files on the old HD? I don't want to switch around HDs everytime i want to play a game.

So... your suggestion RenR, if I get it correctly is that I should "just" spend another $100 so I can play the $60 game?

Sure, there isn't a whole lot involved in completing the install, but is that really the best option we have?

I also tend to think that mandatory installs are far more "proprietary" than optional ones.

it is a nice feature to be able to upgrade the HDD in the PS3 but Sony should not bank on the fact that users will do this. 400 Bones is a lot to put down on a system and not everyone is willing to spend another 100 Bones on upgrading the HDD.

I'm right there with everyone that says that Sony is expecting people to be able to upgrade their hardware for game files is not a good thing to assume.

I'm glad I'm ahead of the curve with a hard drive upgrade but people with 20GB to 40GB hard drives don't stand a chance with the new features and mandatory space for game files.

Unless it comes with an update that lets me play with all of the people getting it on the 360 I'll pass.

That would be a cool idea.

I try to focus on more of the exclusives for my PS3 and if it's multiplatform, I would get it for my 360. Unless I have to much on my 360 list then I'll put it on my PS3.

I have a 120GB for my 360 and an 80GB for my PS3, and I have more games for my 360 than my PS3 and as of room left on both, I have 40GB on my PS3 and 101GB on my 360. Go figure!
