Sony's Kaz Hirai Says 360
Believes Sony to Be Industry Leaders

You’ve really got to hand it to Kaz Hirai, Sony Computer Entertainment’s Chairman and CEO; he’s giving Bobby Kotick a run for his money as far as outrageous quotes go. Speaking with PlayStation Official Magazine this month, Hirai stated that he believes Sony is still the official leader in the video game industry, despite their current-gen system, the PS3, clearly in third place sales-wise. Wait, sales? Money? Profits? Pfffft. Hirai is above all that nonsense, with this to say about his competitors:
"It's difficult to talk about Nintendo because we don't look at their console as being competitors. They're a different world and we operate in our world - that's kind of the way I look at things. And with the Xbox - again, I can't come up with one word to fit. You need a word that describes something that lacks longevity. Last time I checked, they've never had a console that's been on the market for more than four or five years and we've committed to a ten year life cycle, so you do the math. And unless things go really bad, there's no way that at the end of a life cycle our competition is going to have a higher install base."
Although Bobby Kotick may be my mortal enemy, I will admit that he, at least, can put his money where his mouth is; Hirai, on the other hand, has no evidence to support any of his trash talk. Don’t get me wrong, I love my PS3 and fully support Sony on the ten-year lifecycle plan, but I think dismissing sales figures and user numbers entirely while calling yourself an industry leader is a little short-sighted. It will be a few more years until we find out whether Hirai is a prophet or a jackass. Which option is your money on?

Are you sure he isn't talking about the PS2? That console still has a future ahead of it. The PS3? We'll see in due time.
Didn't he say this a few years ago, too? Only issue with this statement is that J-Man already stated what I was going to say. Also I heard a rumor that Microsoft is done making consoles with the XBox360 and will only be developing software from now on. Is there any fact to that rumor?
Q: As far as I know, that Xbox 360 thing is pure speculation. No one here has heard anything about that, and it would have been a pretty big deal.

Someone should have put a text bubble next to that pic that says, "We sold 3 PS3s today!"
Him saying that the Microsoft consoles lack staying power is like saying an expansion team suck cause they've never won the Stanley Cup. You know what I like doing Kaz? Playing original Xbox games on my 360. Call me when I can do that with PS2 games on a PS3... oh, wait... you blew that one.
