Sony: Upcoming PS3 Titles "An Embarrassment of Riches"

Better Than Plain Old Embarrassment

by Sarah

Let’s all be honest for a minute, Sony’s current systems (PS3 and PSP) have faltered a bit while trying to gain ground in the never-ending console wars. The PSP’s release list was anemic at best and nonexistent at worst in the last few months, and the PS3 has struggled to get some triple-A exclusive titles on the system. It certainly doesn't help that former PlayStation franchises like Resident Evil and Final Fantasy are making their way to Microsoft’s system as well. Do you think Sony is worried? Of course not!

Scott Steinberg, SCEA’s VP of Product Marketing, sang the praises of the PS3’s upcoming lineup to GameDaily. When discussing recent releases Killzone 2 and MLB 09: The Show, as well as upcoming exclusive inFamous, Steinberg stated, “It's almost an embarrassment of riches and it really bombards the competition with games that show the power and advantages of the PS3… If PlayStation fans thought that we'd rest on our laurels from last year and if competitors thought that we'd punched ourselves out, both are mistaken!”

It’s good to know that Sony is still working tirelessly to produce triple-A exclusives, but I don’t think Killzone 2, The Show, and inFamous alone constitute “an embarrassment of riches.” Looking over the PS3 release list for the next twelve months, though, there are definitely some exclusives that catch my eye, particularly Uncharted 2 and God of War III. Steinberg didn’t mention the number of promising games announced for the PSP recently, but I for one am hopeful for Sony systems this year. Let’s just hope that Sony can make good on their promises.

Ah corporate grandstanding... how I love it so. Of course the VP of Product Marketing thinks that Sony has a killer line-up, he HAS to think that! It's like being the coach of a losing football team, and saying in a press conference, "well, there's a lot to build on here...". He has to be a half-full kind of guy.

He doesn't sound all that embarrassed.

    Probably pretty rich though....
