Square Enix Bringing Final Fantasy Legend II to DS

In Japan, At Least

While I would prefer Square Enix bring more original games like The World Ends With You to the DS rather than more remakes with the words “Final” and “Fantasy” in them, it seems like they’re not going to stop the remake train. Of course, in the case of hard-to-find gems like Chrono Trigger, a DS version actually turned out to be a good idea. Luckily, it appears that Squenix’s next remake will be another forgotten game and not one we’ve already seen multiple versions of: Final Fantasy Legend II. The Game Boy game from 1991 appeared on the pages of Japanese mag Shonen Jump, and apparently will be getting a DS makeover, which includes adding 3D elements to the game.

If you’ve never heard of Final Fantasy Legend II, I’m not really surprised. It’s actually not a Final Fantasy game at all, but the second game in Square’s long-running SaGa franchise, which was never overwhelmingly popular in the U.S., but has nine installments in Japan. It was renamed Final Fantasy Legend II outside of Japan because Square really liked tricking us in the old days (I know people who still think Final Fantasy VI is Final Fantasy III). The only SaGa game I’ve ever played in the series is SaGa Frontier for the PS1, which is one of my favorite games of that era, so I’m at least a little bit curious. The remake only has a loose Japanese date of "this year" right now, with no word on whether or not it will come to North America, but hopefully we’ll get word on that in the near future.

Oh, and Squenix: You know that thing I said about remakes with “Final Fantasy” in them? That doesn’t apply if you feel like putting Final Fantasy VII through IX on the PSP or something. I’m just putting it out there.

I wouldn't mind playing this through again.

I guess that means it's worth playing, then? Decent RPG?

Decent is the word, but I was still young at the time and I'm hoping it still has my memories.

I loved this game as a kid. I remember it being extremely difficult though. The fact that weapons had a limited amount of uses was a real pain in the ass.

I remember this being a watered down Final Fantasy. And if I remember correctly more like an action RPG (like Secret Of Mana), but my memory is a bit fuzzy.

It's all fuzzy once you hit your mid-to-late 20's. Mostly late because you were old enough to have a Gameboy/GameGear and owned only one console otherwise.

    Sucks, doesn't it? The fuzziness.

@Relayer: You're thinking of Final Fantasy Adventure, which was the first Seiken Densetsu (Secret of Mana) game. Final Fantasy Legend was a standard turn-based game, but the POV during battles was more like the Dragon Warrior series.

Ah Player Oni, I think you're right.

Qmarc80, guess I'm doing pretty good since The Fuzziness (TM) only hit me recently and I'm mid-to-late 30s :)
