Target Introduces Most Roundabout Reserve System Ever

Pay $1 to Reserve, Get $4 Back

by Sarah

With GameStop making money hand over fist (and being the most evilest corporation ever!! Rarr!!), it’s no surprise that other retailers are trying to emulate their practices. First it was stores like Toys R Us and Amazon.com jumping on the trade-in bandwagon, and now Target is opening up a unique reservation system for video games. In fact, they want you to reserve games so bad, they’re actually going to give you money to do so. Sort of.

Here’s how it works: you pick up one of the cards shown above, which will cost you one dollar and reserve the game for you. Then when you pick it up, you pay for the game, and get a $5 Target gift card. Unfortunately, you will not be reimbursed for your original dollar (according to Kotaku, who contacted Target today), so you’re really only getting four dollars, which are only usable at Target.

Of course, it can be argued that a $4 dollar gift card for reserving a game is better than nothing, but is it really worth it? Considering that GameStop, while only guaranteeing you the game and charging nothing extra upon reserves (those bastards!), often gives away pre-order goodies, I don’t know if that $4 Target card will measure up when stacked against some action figures or pretty art books. Would you use Target’s new system? Do you think it’s a good idea? I’m still scratching my head about this one.

Well it's not a rip-off per se.....but it's hardly an incentive over gamestop. So buy your games from one maniacal corporate giant or another. So far I've yet to find a retail store for games that doesn't make me feel a little dirty for shopping there. At least when I buy games online, no one can see me supporting the man....

Yeah, screw Target and GameStop! We should all shop at those "Mom & Pop" video game stores. You know; the ones that don't exist anywhere.
