Game: Bust-A-Move 2: Arcade Edition
Platform: PS1
Year Released: 1996

I don’t really do much puzzle gaming these days. With the exception of Puzzle Quest, there hasn’t been anything in the genre recently able to hold my interest for an extended amount of time, and I tend to not buy games unless I’m going to get a lot of gameplay out of them. However, I do remember loving this gem from the PlayStation days, and since I haven’t reviewed a puzzle game yet, it seemed like it was time to blow off the dust and pop it back in.

The first thing I noticed was the tagline on the case, which states “So addictive… it should be illegal!” I thought that was quite a bold statement to make. Several hours later, it’s all I can do to pull myself away from the game to write this review. It really is quite addictive.

The concept is very simple and if you’ve ever played a puzzle game in your life it will only take a matter of seconds to figure out. As an adorable green dinosaur-like creature (I love him instantly), you shoot colored balls at other colored balls as they descend, matching up colors to bust them. Like I said, it’s not complicated, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a whole lot of fun.

There are three modes available, two single-player and one two-player. Puzzle mode has one player trying to clear each level before it descends too far. The other single-player mode pits the player against various computer characters, such as cats, blobs, and sweet-looking little girls (these ones were always the hardest). This can be a bit frustrating. Instead of each opponent becoming increasingly difficult, random computer players will be insanely hard to beat with no rhyme or reason. Why is the third opponent as hard as the final one? It doesn’t really make much sense, nor does it seem fair when these few players seem to move at the speed of light to bust their bubbles and stack up debris against you.

Two-player mode is always a blast, but be warned; if your buddies are sore losers, this game can end friendships. Much like Dr. Mario, you can cause extra balls to stack up against your opponent, to satisfying and hilarious results. That is, until your little brother gets angry, throws the controller, and storms out of the room. Ah, memories.

With Bust-A-Move 2, what you see is what you get. There’s nothing to unlock, nothing to win, and beating it doesn’t really get you anything, other than the fulfillment of having completed the game. I know it was an arcade game first, but I really think that there could have been a bit of extra content thrown in for the console port. Still, that doesn’t mean it’s not a good game. Anything this addictive has to be worth a play.
