Double Fine's Tim Schafer is one of my favorite people in the gaming industry. This is partially because he made some of my all-time favorite games, but also because he's outspoken and often hilarious. In an interview with Eurogamer at the Develop Conference overseas, the Brutal Legend and Day of the Tentacle game designer had some choice words about Activision CEO Bobby Kotick, who is probably the most hated man in gaming.

After talking about developing games, his favorite movies, and the possibility of releasing smaller titles on XBLA and PSN, Schafer was asked about Bobby Kotick--a sore subject since Activision dropped Brutal Legend under Kotick's reign, and later sued Double Fine when they were trying to release the game through EA. Schafer tried to play nice at first, but finally let loose:

His obligation is to his shareholders. Well, he doesn't have to be as much of a dick about it, does he? I think there is a way he can do it without being a total prick. It seems like it would be possible. It's not something he's interested in... Well, he makes a big deal about not liking games, and I just don't think that attitude is good for games in general. I don't think we're an industry of widgets. I don't think we can approach it like we approach bars of soap, where you're just trying to make the cheapest bar of soap. He definitely has that that kind of widget-maker attitude. I don't think he's great for the industry, overall. You can't just latch onto something when it's popular and then squeeze the life out of it and then move on to the next one. You have to at some point create something, build something.

I definitely don't think Schafer is wrong, and I'm sure a lot of people would agree with him, but it's not every day you hear about a member of the gaming industry being so outspoken about the CEO of gaming's biggest third-party developer. Kudos, Tim Schafer, and good luck with your keynote speech at Develop. I'm sure it will go swimmingly.
