Time Magazine Lists Top Ten Games of 2008

Probably Won't Look Like Your Top Ten List

by Sarah

When it comes to video games and mainstream media, I tend to ignore just about everything, because the two of them together often leads to uninformed, sometimes idiotic stories that just anger me. However, I couldn’t pass up the chance to look at Time’s “Top Ten Games of 2008” list, because I’m a sucker for Top Ten lists. You are too, don’t lie! Here’s what Lev Grossman of Time thinks were the best games this year:

10. Spore
9. Field Runners
8. Hunted Forever
7. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
6. Dead Space
5. Gears of War 2
4. Rock Band 2
3. LittleBigPlanet
2. Braid
1. Grand Theft Auto IV

You know, to be honest, I have no problems with the top five. GTA IV was undoubtedly one of the best games of the year, I absolutely adore Braid, LBP, and Rock Band 2, and Gears 2 was a very solid sequel to one of the top games of 2006. However, I still can’t take this list as seriously as I would one from a publication dedicated only to video games. Maybe it’s because Grossman refers to GTA as a “shoot-em-up”, says that the best thing about Rock Band 2 is its “candy-colored interface”, and puts both a free Flash game and iPhone game on the list in a year that has seen numerous fantastic retail games. Also, does anyone else think it’s weird that the list is completely devoid of RPGs with games like Persona 4 and Fallout 3 out in 2008?

Maybe Time rushed it a little bit in its attempt to be the first to get the ball rolling on the “_____ of 2008” lists, but this one just seems off to me. Of course, at the end of the day these are just opinions, so maybe the guy just really, really loves Flash games and “shoot-em-ups”. Stay tuned to Gamervision for our own Game of the Year nominees and winners in the coming weeks.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, HOWEVER, this list is full of so much fail I can't believe it. Time Magazine should hire a REAL gamer to do this stuff.

Hunted Forever is an online game and Field Runners is for the i-Phone. Who would have really known of either of these titles..., unless the author of the story really had no clue and went off what their friends told them.

Well either that or the author didn't have any idea what the hell to write in there and just "Googled" everything. The world may never know.

((Yes, I took the time to look for the sources of these games. Sad, I know.))
