Tony Hawk Ride Gets Possible Price (UPDATED)

At Least According to GameStop

by Sarah

When Tony Hawk Ride and its hoverboard-esque skateboard peripheral were announced about a week and a half ago, many of us at Gamervision HQ speculated on what the price would be. Most guesses fell in the $150-$200 range, about the price of a Rock Band or Guitar Hero World Tour bundle. As it turns out, Activision may actually surprise us, because according to GameStop's website, Tony Hawk Ride with the skateboard will be $119.99.

UPDATE: Oh yeah, by the way, that's the same price as another Activision game with a new peripheral, DJ Hero. Are these just placeholder prices for games with new accessories? Which one do you think is more worth it?

At first, given my original expectations, that seemed like a good deal, but then I realized: that's still over a hundred dollars for a Tony Hawk game. I'm definitely not sold enough on this hoverboard thing to pay that much for it, especially in the middle of October when the holiday season is kicking off. I'm hoping that we'll get a chance to look at this at E3 next week, so await our report before you go pre-order crazy.

    That's... freaking expensive. Even Guitar Hero's plastic guitar is cheaper. I wonder if the Wii version will be a little less money because it can use the system's motion sensing controls instead of a hover board.

    I have a question... Has Activision thought about how this would alienate any paraplegic fans of the Tony Hawk series? I mean there have to be some, right? Unless this game comes with the option to play with the old control style these potential fans would be unable to play. And if the devs do put in a "classic" control option, what's the point of using the board? The Wii control scheme mentality can be applied here... for example, given the choice between the Wii and nunchuck versus a classic controller or GameCube controller for something like Super Smash Bros. Brawl I would pick the later option 100% of the time. Would the option of a traditional control scheme for THR negate the player using the board?

    Obviously, that's all speculation. Maybe the devs are going to force the players to get up off the couch to use that board, but as it stands, there's no word either way on how the game will be played. The biggest question I have at this point is whether or not this gimmick (let's call it what it is, people) is enough to pull fans back to this failing franchise.

    I actually don't think that $120 sounds like it's too expensive for this. Hell, Beatles Rock Band is almost double the price, and while a lot of people said they wouldn't get it, I don't know that there was "outrage" over it. From all accounts, the new peripheral cost a lot to develop, and is pretty sophisticated equipment. I don't know if I'll get it or not (I have to hear reviews on how the whole thing will work) but I'm certainly not turned off by the price.

    @seanasaurus - not to sound insensitive, but I don't know that paraplegics are exactly the target demographic for a skateboard simulator. Did you ask a similar question about the Guitar Hero guitar for the armless?

    I think seanasaurus has a valid argument. Video games are a popular hobby for people that suffer from wheelchair binding difficulties. It's one of the few things that they can compete in at the same level as everyone else. And for the record armless people probably weren't playing video games in the first place...unless they've got really talented toes.

    @seanasaurus
    No it's not enough to bring fading fans back to the franchise. I loved T.H.U.G. 1, but couldn't care less about the latest installments. If I want a skateboard game these days I'll pick up Skate 2.

    Has it been mentioned if the game is Balance Board-compatible? If so, at least the Wii version should be cheaper.

    All that dough for a controller...wait. Haven't many people been spending the money on these things for years? Besides, I don't think that thing pictured above would even support my weight. So, in the end, they're going to eliminate a lot of money due to overweight gamers. Well, that's how it should be, anyway. Fat gamer haters!
