Top-Selling Games of 2008 Might Surprise You

Top-Selling So Far, That Is

by Sarah

It may only be September, but we're already having a pretty big year for video game sales. Gamasutra has gone ahead and compiled the data for the three big systems, seeing which games sold the most on which console. Some of the results are not at all surprising, some kind of are, but it's interesting to see what's been happening in games sales so far this year.

Of course, these lists are about to get shot to hell as we enter the insane holiday season of gaming releases, but check them out anyway to see what the best-selling games were from January to August of this year.

PS3:

1.    Grand Theft Auto IV
2.    Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
3.    Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
4.    Madden NFL 09
5.    Gran Turismo 5: Prologue

Xbox 360:

1.    Grand Theft Auto IV
2.    Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
3.    Madden NFL 09
4.    Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2
5.    Army of Two

Wii:

1.    Super Smash Bros. Brawl
2.    Mario Kart (with Wheel)
3.    Wii Play (with Remote)
4.    Wii Fit (with Balance Board)
5.    Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (with Guitar)

Yeah, I don't think any of us are particularly shocked to see GTA IV and Madden 09 on the list, nor am I shocked that four out of five Wii titles are first party (though, Wii Play, again? Come on, man, that's been out since February 2007!) It is impressive to see Call of Duty 4  ranking so high since it came out last year, but apparently it has been selling this year as well. My guess is that Gears of War 2, LittleBigPlanet, and Fallout 3 (just to name a few) will be taking up spots on these lists in months to come. Any of you have predictions to what the top sellers of the holiday season will be?

i am actually most suprised to see Army of Two there for the 360. I am not saying that it is a bad game I just did not see that one being in the top 5 of highest selling 360 games.

Call of duty 4 sure is keeping it strong, good for them. Also GT5 Prologue rounding out the top 5, goes to show you how much people LOVE that series.

Cant say anything about the Wii, only 1 game on that list that i like and its numero uno.
