Toy Story 3: The Video Game Trailer Shows Off Toybox Mode

Also Shows Off Toys

by Sarah

During the 16-bit era, one of my favorite games was Toy Story for the Sega Genesis. I didn't actually have a Sega Genesis, but my best friend did, and I spent many, many hours at her house playing her Genesis games, one of which was Toy Story. We spent the summer of 1996 trying over and over again to beat the game, which (in my memories) was a really good platformer with plenty of level variety. Yes, it was a movie tie-in, but back then movie tie-ins didn't automatically mean garbage, or maybe it just seemed that way because I was younger and my expectations for games weren't as high. It is with this childlike wonder and optimism that I viewed this trailer for Toy Story 3: The Video Game, which is coming out in June in conjuction with the movie.

It's certainly not a 16-bit, 2D platformer, and I don't think I'm going to spend this entire summer trying to beat it with a friend, but I could see it being one of the better movie tie-in games to come out this year. Of course, in this era of gaming, that's not saying much. Tie-ins are usually a cheap and quick way to cash in on a movie's success, but Toy Story 3's Toybox Mode, in which players can design their own levels, might give this game a little something extra. What do you think: better-than-average platformer, or usual crapfest? We'll find out for sure when the game launches on June 15.
