Want to See the Most-Played Games on Xbox Live?

Sure You Do, Everyone Loves Lists!

by Sarah

It’s 2009 now, and in the video game industry, that means it’s time to look at all kinds of stats from 2008 and see who did what. Yes, it is absolutely imperative to know which systems sold the most units, which games got the highest review scores, and, of course, what the most popular games on Xbox Live were. I was completely lost before I had this information, but thankfully, Microsoft’s Major Nelson has cleared it all up for me. Even better, he has compiled the information in three handy lists for easy reading. The relevant information is below.

I must say, I am surprised by a few things on this list. First of all, I’m a bit saddened that Left 4 Dead isn’t even in the top 20, as it’s the most fun I’ve ever had on Xbox Live. Also, it’s great that Castle Crashers topped the XBLA list despite being in need of a patch for most of 2008. As for the original Xbox titles, I think it’s great that people are still getting use out of their last-gen games, and it makes sense that people are still playing Halo 2 and Fable. Crimson Skies, though? I didn’t really see that one coming.

What are you playing online these days? Does it look anything like these lists?

I would have thought that SSFIITHDR would have been higher. I guess it was because it came out so late in the year. Probably the same thing with L4D seanasaurus.

Here's what you do, Coop: go to metacritic and find any game with an average score of 90 or higher. Those games were all overrated and they are complete trash, no one who reviews games knows anything.

Alright, so I'm in the clear loving Blitz II?

Pretty sure it's the best game ever.

To Coop: Yes Gears 2 is shit. The Campaign is amazing but the MP (you know, that thing that made Gears 1 the greatness of which it WAS) sucks balls. The games online mechanics were changed completely, and not even for the better. Most Gears fans agree, and I'm not talking about those who just jumped on board and played #2. Next time you take a pic with CliffyBitch, tell him to fix his game, please.

Also, Sarah, sarcasm duly noted. What, just because I have a great dislike for GTA4 and Gears 2 (Just the MP) I'm automatically wrong cause metacritic is the almighty god of gaming reviews? Well, why don't you take a look at Gears 2 on it? It's user rating is a 6.2 based on over 900 votes. Gears 1, an 80. By the way, GTA got an 80 from the users. Which are the people who play the games for hours on end. So I trust their judgment.

To be fair, it's actually pretty well known that Gears 2's pitiful user score on Metacritic was caused by ps3 fanboys giving it 1's and 0's. of course this was in response to the same thing being done to littlebigplanet by 360 fanboys. gta iv though, seems to be legit. still a fun game though.

    1. I play games for hours on end too.

Yeah, the fanboys tore those games apart on metacritic to the point where the website now has to revise their user review systems, so the user reviews are definitely not a way to prove anything. And no, I don't think metacritic is the be all end all to determine who should like what games, because all reviews are based on opinions. But it is a good place to get a decent idea of what people think about games--excluding the ridiculous fanboy reviews, of course.

Riphade, seriously, you're well within your right not to like Gears 2 and GTA IV. I respect your opinion, those games are not for everyone. You're talking to someone who would never got into the Gears series, I'd rather play Left 4 Dead any day. I think the sarcasm from everyone else is in response to your attitude that people who enjoy these games are not "real gamers". I guess that just strikes a nerve with me since I've been playing video games for two decades and have thirteen systems in my house.

Like Coop said, we ALL play video games for hours on end. It's one thing to not like some popular games, there will never EVER be a game that is universally loved by every gamer on the planet. I just don't think it's up to you (or any of us) to say what makes people "real gamers".

@Sarah: While I respect you and think you're the coolness to hang out with, especially watching you try to play "One Winged Angel" on GH2, lol. I must say this... When did I say anything about "real gamers"? I've been playing games for 2 decades as well. Hell, I remember bring my NES everywhere I went, and rockin the SMB. With the whole metacritic thing, yes I'll admit, I'm a fandboy. However, I won't knock a game cause it's a different system. I LOVE my 360, but I thought LBP was the shit... and hours of video aside, yes MGS4.

Honestly, fanboys or not. I agree with the GTA4 and sort of the Gears 2 user rating. Gears 2 should be more like a 75 or 80 cause of the great Campaign.

@Sarah (again): I agree, with L4D (haven't gotten it... yet) over Gears 2 MP, but not Gears 1, lol. See my problem? I believe it's sad. Anyway, I'm moving on from this topic.
