What Are You Playing This Week?

This is probably one of my more boring weeks as far as video games go. I’m usually able to juggle several games at once, between all of the systems I have, but lately, I’ve been focused on one game: Valkyria Chronicles for the PS3. Yes, I know I already played, reviewed, and loved this strategy gem last year, but I have become re-obsessed with it, which is actually pretty easy since the game is so damn good. It’s also very challenging, especially if you want to get better scores on each mission, which is what I’m trying to do. This game will probably command my attention for at least another week or two.
On the review front, I just started Star Ocean: The Last Hope. So far, I can’t say I’m loving it—but I want to! I feel like this game should be perfect for me. Square Enix RPG? Check. Blond, spiky-haired, spunky hero with a cute girl best friend/probable love interest? Check. Epic cut scenes? Check. However, the battle system is just not working for me at all. I’ve complained about Star Ocean’s fighting before, but now I almost miss the button-mashing simplicity of the first two games. So far (and this is mostly based on the hour-long fighting tutorial), the battle system is kind of the opposite of intuitive. Now, to be fair, I’m not nearly far enough into this game to make any kind of final judgment—these are merely my first impressions. I really, really want it to get better, especially since I’m stuck with it for at least another 40 hours either way.
Then there’s Animal Crossing: City Folk, which I’ve gotten back into with the promise of spring in the air. There’s really just no other game that better suits my early-morning-drinking-my-coffee gaming period that usually occurs between 7:30 and 8:30 in the a.m. Also, I am this close to being a Bellionaire. I only wish that any of the people on my friends list were still playing it. Anyone? Anyone?
Yes, I told you it was an uneventful gaming week for me. Oh, wait, crap, I almost forgot that Grey’s Anatomy comes out this week. Um, why did I agree to review that again?

I'm achievement hunting my way through the orange box. And though it might seem like an exercise in pride, getting the Zombie Chopper achievement (Complete Ravenholm using only the gravity gun) was an awesome time.
That stage quickly becomes survival-horror when you can't use conventional guns. Lots of running, lots of scouring for sawblades....and then some more running.

Finally picked up Gears 2 this weekend. Of course going to be playing Left 4 Dead as always. Also, if you see me playing Castle Crashers still, I'm probably on my stationary bike again. :-p

I would like to amend my earlier statement about Star Ocean: The Last Hope by saying that after a few more hours, the battle system is much more tolerable. Still not in love with it, but it has its moments.

Killzone 2 had almost my full attention this past weekend. However, I also played CoD 4 online as well as Left 4 Dead. The rest of the week looks to be the same. However, I do need to finish Gears of War 2 single player campaign. So I may get around to that also.

few things to review this week... but most importantly, MLB 09. Hoping Gamestop is still doing the midnight launch tonight.

Having finally finished GTA IV, I can now turn my attention to other things that have been demanding my attention. First up, I've got to start getting some on-line time in with SFIV. A lot of you out there have been talking a fair amount of shit, so it's time to put up or shut-up. I'm also planning to create a new Pro in NHL '09. I can't figure out what is wrong with the one I've made now - in 42 games I have 64 points, and was just sent down to the second line of the AHL team. I think I'll have to try creating a center.
I'm also going to continue playing Killzone 2. I can't say enough good things about this game's presentation. It's simply gorgeous.
