What Are Your 2010 Gaming Resolutions?

I’m Making Mine Tonight

by Sarah

Have you checked a calendar recently? It’s the last day of 2009, which is kind of crazy. It’s the end of an action-packed year and a crazy, life-changing decade. As is tradition, I find myself thinking about what my New Year’s resolutions will be. In my adult years, I’ve made an effort to decide on realistic resolutions and follow through on them. I wanted to become a paid writer: check. I wanted to work in the video game industry: check. Though sharing my regular resolutions for 2010 might be a bit boring, I did decide upon some gaming resolutions that I’m going to try and follow through with.

Resolution #1: I Will Finish My Unfinished Games from 2009.

This is something I failed miserably at in 2008 and 2009, so maybe 2010 will be the year that the number of incomplete games on my shelf starts to dwindle. I’ve tried not to start games that I knew I wouldn’t have time to finish, but I still need to reach the end of Brutal Legend and Assassin’s Creed II. January is looking kind of barren for me as far as new games go, but once February 9 rolls around, things are going to get busy again. Which brings me to my next resolution…

Resolution #2: I Will Play Through BioShock Again Before BioShock 2 Comes Out.

Seriously, this is something that I’ve wanted to do for two years now. In fact, I almost start BioShock earlier this week, but when I turned my 360 on, I accidentally got sucked into a marathan Trials HD session. A game like that deserves to be played more than once, and hopefully the experience of BioShock 2 will only be heightened with the first one fresh in my memory.

Resolution #3: I Don’t Have to Buy Every Single Game the Day it Comes Out.

Okay, obviously I don’t buy every game that pops up on store shelves—I’d be massively broke if that was the case. I do, however, often buy highly anticipated games and then not have time to play them for weeks or months after I take them home. Often by then, the price has dropped, and I find myself wondering why I spent $60 so that a wrapped game could sit on my shelf. I need to be more realistic about what I actually have time for. Also, on a related note, I don’t need to buy every single special edition ever. That’s gonna be a tough one to stick to.

Resolution #4: I Will Use EA Sports Active More Regularly.

Aha! I tricked you and snuck a health-related resolution in here! In all seriousness, though, exercise “games” have come a long way this year, and EA Sports Active and recent expansion More Workouts remain my favorite choices for Wii exercise. Unfortunately, the busy holiday season has made it damn near impossible to stay on a regular workout schedule. When I do use Sports Active and work out with my own exercise playlist, I feel pretty good about myself, and have more energy; these are definitely good things, and I should try to make that happen more.

Resolution #5: Play and Complete Earthbound.

I barely have time to play all the new games I want to, so why am I trying to play through a 16-bit, 14-year-old SNES cult classic? Because I never have, and my life will be incomplete until I do. A friend of mine recently lent me her SNES copy of the game after being appalled upon hearing that I had never played Earthbound, so it’s about time I righted that wrong. Besides, my Super Nintendo definitely deserves some love in 2010.

Committing more time to the completion of the games I currently own, and will own, within a reasonable time. Even with school and work I should be able to accomplish this. I think I only had enough time to complete three games this calendar year.

Focusing on finishing games that I have started and not completed. I know for me and many other gamers that get caught up in a new release or just can't get enough of 1 or a couple of games and by the time you realize that there are a hand full of games that you have not got to finish. So, I'm going to make the list of games that I need to beat and focus on them, which by the way will be hard because of this year line up of games like Bayonetta, Darksiders, Army of Two, and the sweeeeeeeeeet Mass Effect 2. I'm going to need a lot of prayers to keep my resolution.

There are a number of games I hope to finish this year, and I totally agree with not buying ever game the day it comes out. Or maybe I make that one next year.

I'm in exactly the same boat as you, Sarah. I don't need to get every anticipated game when it comes out and I don't always need special editions. I am also resolving to beat my unfinished games of 09 and not buy another title until I do.

Star Trek Online is the exception.

I resolve to be more emotionally distant from my loved ones and potential mates by spending more time with my Xbox 360.

Mine is to finish the games downloaded to my consoles. For the most part, I'm not buying any game until march because of both Final Fantasy 13 and God of War 3. While I will rent a game here and there, can't buy anything until I finish the downloaded goodies.

HA! Beat my first game of the year! It had to be the continuing story of some religious faith that cannot fully explain His works to people who "don't understand their faith" and..., er, never mind. I'll just say that I have beaten Assassin's Creed 2. It took me about a month or so extra to make the purchase, but I did, and I beat it just about a half hour ago. I'm going to quiver in anticipation of the next game in the line.

Now all I have to do is beat Ratchet & Clank Future Tools of Destruction and Modern Warfare 2 in order to feel like a man again.

Oh! Star Trek Online comes out later this month! WOOT!
