What I Want in 2008

A Look into the Future

by Sarah

Well, I haven’t even beaten all the games I’ve bought in the past month yet, and already I’m thinking about what to get next. Luckily for me, there’s a little bit of a lull in big new releases coming up, giving me ample time to get caught up in time for the new year. And while 2007 may have been the best year for video games in history, 2008 isn’t looking too shabby, either. Here are just a few of the things I’m waiting for next year.

LittleBigPlanet

I’m really big on creativity, so a PS3-exclusive that’s basically a make-your-own-platformer sounds like a dream. The environments can be edited as you go along, with more and more options along the way. All the videos I’ve seen so far look amazing, and I’m sure I’m going to have a lot of fun with this one.

Brutal Legend

Two words: Tim Schafer. This man has made some of my favorite video games and is one of the most creative people in the industry. Give me anything with his name on it and I will play it. Throw in a storyline that’s totally rock and roll and it’s sure to be a winner. It doesn’t come out until about a year from now, but I’ve already got it reserved.

Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core

I’ve been waiting for this game for what feels like years. I know that in the past Square Enix has messed up a little bit when trying to do sequels or spin-offs of its popular Final Fantasy series, but this is one that I actually have high hopes for. Let’s hope that it actually sticks to its March release date; it’s already been delayed a number of times.

A Release Date for Final Fantasy XIII

Speaking of all things Final Fantasy… I’m really not expecting to see the next true installment anytime soon. Obviously, I wouldn’t oppose if they were to release it in ’08, but I’m not holding my breath. It would, however, be nice to get a solid release date, and one that they’re actually going to stick with. And while you’re at it, Squenix, can we expect Kingdom Hearts III anytime in the foreseeable future? Please?

Catching Up

After the massive amount of new releases, almost all of them seemingly Game of the Year contenders, it’s finally time for me to catch my breath. I’m done buying new games for the rest of the year and making good progress on the ones I already have. So what am I going to do during the lull in big new titles? Play some old ones. There’s a whole slew of games just waiting to be played. Persona 2, Chrono Trigger, and Psychonauts are all on my immediate list. Tracking down my LucasArts collection and forcing them to work on my computer is also a short-term goal of mine.

Naturally, there are lots of other titles coming out next year that I’ll want to get my hands on, and it probably won’t be long before I’m overwhelmed with new releases once again. But will 2008 be as big a year for video games as 2007 has been? Only time will tell…

Hmm, interesting list. A lot of Sony exclusives.

I guess there are a lot of Sony exclusives, I didn't even realize that. I hope this doesn't ruin our reputation as PS3-haters.

Brutal Legend looks like it's going to be pretty sweet. And I have already made a place in my heart for the little guys in LittleBigPlanet.
